“The Old Guard 2” lands on Netflix today, bringing a fresh batch of epic adventures for the immortals, yet the press hasn’t had a preview.
A Promising Sequel
Released in 2020, the original The Old Guard made a lasting impression with its blend of high-octane action and thoughtful exploration of immortality. The film even climbed back into Netflix’s top 10 just days before the release of its sequel.
The story of Andromache of Scythia, played by Charlize Theron, captivated a broad audience at the time. Subscribers were clearly thrilled by the battles and moral quandaries faced by these immortal mercenaries, who are constantly torn between their quest for justice and their troubled pasts.
In The Old Guard 2, the stakes are higher: Andy—short for Andromache—and her team of immortal warriors return, more determined than ever to protect the world. Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) remains in exile following his betrayal, Quynh (Veronica Ngô) is driven by a thirst for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, and Andy, who has recently discovered she is mortal, grapples with her new vulnerability amidst a mysterious threat that could endanger everything she has built over thousands of years.
Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) seek help from Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who might hold the key to unraveling the mystery of their eternal existence.
A Stellar Cast
The magic of the cast continues to shine. Charlize Theron naturally returns to her iconic role, supported by KiKi Layne and Matthias Schoenaerts, who bring the band of immortal warriors back to life.
But that’s not all! Uma Thurman joins the cast as the enigmatic Discord, and Henry Golding, portraying Tuah, brings a refreshing change and promises to add a new dynamic to the group. The reunion between Andy and Quynh, after 500 years apart, promises to be particularly intense and emotionally charged.
Directed by Victoria Mahoney, The Old Guard 2 aims to be more than just an action flick. It is intended to tackle deep themes, such as the meaning of life and the existential dilemmas faced by the immortals. Time will tell if the film lives up to its promise.
