From July 15 to 21, like many viewers in France, you might be planning to watch “The Odyssey,” a grand blockbuster by Christopher Nolan, tackling Homer’s epic poem. If you’re heading to a Pathé theater to catch this film (IMAX or otherwise), or any other movie for that matter, you’ll also get an exclusive first look at another ambitious film, this time from France, scheduled for release on February 10, 2027: “Fantômas – The New World,” with its teaser poster unveiled during this period.

Nearly two decades after Christophe Gans’ aborted project, which was set to star Vincent Cassel and Jean Reno, it’s now Frédéric Tellier (L’Abbé Pierre, Goliath…) taking the helm. Guillaume Canet is likely to play the infamous evil genius, a faceless enemy that terrorized Paris in 1914, although his participation is yet to be confirmed (perhaps the trailer in theaters will do so).

What’s certain is that the actor and director will be featured, alongside Romain Duris (possibly as Commissioner Juve, or Fantômas himself), Louis Peres, and Ana Girardot, who stepped in for Lyna Khoudri. This adaptation aims not to compete with the comedies led by Jean Marais and Louis de Funès, but to revisit the books where the character originated, shaping it into a daring action thriller.

“Bringing Something Quite Ambitious to This Franchise”

The same books that inspired characters like Batman. The teaser poster, reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight, may hint at the tone and scope of Frédéric Tellier’s film, possibly adopting a realistic, grounded approach to the character. SND’s distribution head Christophe Courtois described the project in a November interview as “a huge project.”

“The goal is to bring something quite ambitious to this franchise. We’re not shy about it; the aim is to be along the lines of, say, a Monte Cristo.” Here’s hoping that come next February, it enjoys the same success as Pierre Niney’s film, which drew an audience of 9,451,713 in 2024, fueling a resurgence in adaptations of classic French literature, a trend this new Fantômas is looking to join.
