First Look: Iconic 20-Year-Old Comic Book Adaptation Hits Theaters in 2026!

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the beloved French comic book series “Les Légendaires” by Patrick Sobral (published by Delcourt), which has sold over 10 million copies, is set to hit the big screen, and the release date has been announced!

Since its debut in 2004, “Les Légendaires” has expanded to include 23 comic books, 8 spin-off series, adaptations into manga, role-playing games, and an animated series. This cultural phenomenon by Patrick Sobral, which has already sold more than 10 million copies, is now being adapted into a feature film.

Directed by Guillaume Ivernel (Dragon Hunters) and scripted by Antoine Schoumsky, this animated movie is produced by Pan-Européenne (A Little Something Extra, The Tiger and the President) and revealed its release date and a first visual at the Angoulême Comic Book Festival.

“Les Légendaires” will premiere in theaters on January 28, 2026. The teaser poster below features the Jovénia Stone, which caused the Jovénia Accident that turned the inhabitants of the planets Alysia and Astria into children.

The protagonists of “Les Légendaires,” once the greatest heroes of their era, are cursed to revert to their 10-year-old selves! Danaël, Jadina, Gryf, Shimy, and Razzia will combine their powers to defeat the sorcerer Darkhell and free their planet from eternal childhood.

A Different Visual Style from the Comics

With a budget of 15 million euros, this animated film has been in development for eight years and will draw from the first two volumes of the series, according to creator Patrick Sobral in an interview with France 3 regions. “The film remains an original work. It’s crucial that the spirit of the comic book is preserved and that fans find it familiar,” he said.

He added: “From a narrative standpoint, the story remains the same. However, visually, we are moving away from the manga style to embrace a more international aesthetic, akin to models from Dreamworks or Pixar. The visuals will be more realistic and engaging.”

Since its inception in 2004, “Les Légendaires” has indeed adopted manga conventions. Thus, the movie will visually diverge from the comic books. The return to childhood will be experienced in theaters starting January 28, 2026!
