Set in the world of soccer, the manga “Blue Lock” is set to hit the big screen as a live-action film scheduled for release in Japan in August next year, timed to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the 2026 World Cup. Here’s a first look!
You might have noticed on November 23, 2022, Japan made headlines by defeating Germany 2-1 during the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar (a tournament outcome we won’t dwell on out of respect for the still-healing wounds of French fans). Around that time, the term “Blue Lock Project” began to trend on social media, gaining more traction as Japan continued its impressive performance against Spain shortly thereafter.
The Soccer Battle Royale
This wasn’t a reference to the color of the team’s jerseys (though it might seem so), but rather to the shonen manga Blue Lock. Aimed at a young male audience (hence the term “shonen”), the title has been published since August 2018 in Japan and June 2021 internationally. It focuses on a national soccer team with a concept similar to that of the Hunger Games or Battle Royale. It’s less violent, involving a rigorous selection program to pick the best players for the 2022 World Cup, like a more individualistic, attack-focused version of the classic “Captain Tsubasa.”
Thus, reality and fiction partly merged, bringing further attention to a title that was already a phenomenon at the time, now having sold over fifty million copies worldwide. The series becoming a live-action film, following an animated series and a feature-length animation, seems only natural, and the first images have already been released.
You won’t have to wait long to see the results, as the release of this Blue Lock film is scheduled for August 7, 2026, in Japan, across about 350 screens, to ride the wave of the Football World Cup happening in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Fumiya Takahashi will star as Yoichi Isagi, the protagonist determined to outshine other competitors to secure a spot on the national team, offering him a second chance after he thought his opportunity had permanently slipped away.
No French Release Date Yet
No release date has been announced for France, where the film has already been purchased, while the Japanese distributor, the legendary TOHO, anticipates massive success for the adaptation of this manga translated into twenty-four languages worldwide. If you haven’t yet checked it out, now is the time to start before you’re swept up in the potential tidal wave.
