Lemkin Institute Issues ‘Red Flag Alert for Genocide’ Following Musk’s Controversial Gesture
The Lemkin Institute, named for the Jewish Polish lawyer who first defined the term genocide, has issued a serious warning for the potential of genocide in the United States. This warning came after Elon Musk, a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump, appeared to make a Nazi salute at a celebration following Trump’s inauguration.
The Institute expressed grave concerns over Musk’s actions, stating, “Musk’s act is a frightening signal of things to come.” They firmly dismissed the idea that Musk’s gestures could have been accidental.
Highlighting Musk’s significant influence within the new administration, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention declared a Red Flag Alert for genocide in the United States.
The Institute also called on Americans to critically assess the claims that Musk’s gestures were simply awkward or peculiar signs of excitement that were ultimately harmless.
The organization questioned the plausibility of ignorance regarding the salute, especially considering the history of Nazism in South Africa and the extensive exposure Americans have had to the Nazi salute through media like the History Channel. “It is almost impossible that this was an unfortunate mistake,” they argued. The statement continued, doubting the likelihood that a public figure like Musk would inadvertently repeat a gesture resembling the Nazi salute, particularly during a high-profile event celebrating Donald Trump’s election victory. “We strongly believe that Elon Musk’s gesture was intentional. We will be happy to be proven wrong.”
The Institute stressed that Musk’s gesture, which resembled a Hitler salute, should not be ignored or excused. They criticized the U.S. media under President Biden’s administration for lacking the courage and honesty to adequately report on the new administration. The responsibility, they argued, falls on American citizens to protect the Constitution and the foundational values of the nation against all threats. “Trans people, refugees, and migrants are not the threats,” the statement read. “The billionaires with close ties to our new president who display the Nazi salute and aim to supplant the traditional elites with a new hierarchy—these are the real threats to America.”
Musk’s actions have caused widespread concern, including reactions from European public officials who have observed Musk’s efforts to support far-right parties.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach expressed his concerns, noting Musk’s known connections with right-wing populists and the fascist tradition, which he said should alarm any democrat.
Meanwhile, far-right extremists have openly celebrated Musk’s gestures, which they interpreted without difficulty.
As reported by Rolling Stone, the Ohio chapter of the Proud Boys shared a clip of Musk’s video on its Telegram channel, accompanied by the caption, ‘Hail Trump!’
