Major Nationwide Protest Against Trump’s Policies Scheduled
“Immigration. Medicaid. Workers’ rights. Unions. Education. You name it—we’re drawing the line,” declared a statement from one union.
According to reports, this Saturday is set to witness the largest single-day protest against the Trump administration since President Donald Trump resumed office. Across the United States, hundreds of thousands are expected to participate in these protests under the banner “Hands Off!”
The details of where these events will take place can be accessed online. The events are scheduled to occur at various times throughout the day.
The organizers of the “Hands Off!” events have critiqued Trump and Elon Musk for acting as if they own the country. Their website describes the event as a critical response to what they call “the most flagrant power grab in recent history.”
Their critique extends to the administration’s policies: “They aim to dismantle America piece by piece—closing down Social Security offices, laying off vital workers, scrapping consumer safeguards, and slashing Medicaid funding—all to finance their tax cuts for the wealthy. They are essentially handing over our tax money, our public services, and our democracy to the super-rich,” the website explains, also emphasizing that nonviolent protest is fundamental to their approach.
An event spokesperson told Common Dreams that over 500,000 people have registered to participate nationwide, with numbers rapidly increasing. Furthermore, the spokesperson noted that the number of planned events has surpassed 1,000 and is still rising.
This wave of demonstrations serves as a stark warning to the Republican establishment under Trump, who has given Elon Musk a significant role in his government, especially in efforts to cut federal jobs and spending.
Musk recently invested heavily in a Wisconsin Supreme Court election held on April 1, making it the priciest judicial election in U.S. history according to some reports. Despite this, Musk’s favored candidate, Judge Brad Schimel, was defeated.
“This outcome sends a powerful message from a key swing state that Americans are deeply frustrated and angry with both Trump and Musk,” commented John Nichols, a correspondent for The Nation, on Democracy Now!
Support for the protests is widespread, with dozens of unions, watchdog organizations, and advocacy groups like the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Americans for Tax Fairness, and Accountable.US endorsing the movement.
“People from across the country are uniting at hundreds of events to clearly voice one message: Hands Off!” SEIU posted on X, a platform owned by Musk. “Immigration. Medicaid. Workers’ rights. Unions. Education. You name it—we’re drawing the line.”
Bill McKibben, a journalist and veteran climate activist, expressed his expectations on Bluesky: “Expect to see a lot of senior citizens at the April 5 Hands Off rallies—we’ve been organizing like crazy at Third Act,” referring to the organization he co-founded, which focuses on mobilizing Americans aged 60 and older.
Earlier in February, anti-Trump “Movement 50501” protests were held nationwide, and in recent weeks, demonstrations under the #TakedownTesla slogan have specifically targeted Tesla, Musk’s electric car company.
