Over 600 US Cities Rise Up Against ‘Billionaire Takeover’ This May Day!

“Billionaires are undermining unions and immigrants because they are intimidated by our united strength. Yet, we stand fearless.”

As May Day approaches, labor unions and human rights groups are gearing up for a nationwide demonstration intended to challenge President Donald Trump, his advisor Elon Musk, and other wealthy elites accused of undermining democratic values. A key organizer announced that these protests are designed to “deliver a decisive message” to these figures.

Saqib Bhatti, executive director of Bargaining for the Common Good, expressed that normal operations will not continue unimpeded while egregious actions such as abductions from streets, cuts in essential services, and erosion of liberties persist. “They’re instigating a crisis in our communities, and we plan to take this crisis right to their front doors,” Bhatti declared.

Scheduled to unfold in over 600 cities across all 50 states, the protests will confront what is described as Trump’s “agenda for billionaires,” which involves significant reductions to programs like Head Start, Medicaid, and Social Security to facilitate $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

Outrage has also been sparked by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, appointed by Trump to head the Department of Government Efficiency, following his decision to eliminate over 280,000 federal positions. Meanwhile, Trump’s efforts to suppress pro-Palestinian voices, which his administration equates with antisemitism and terrorism endorsement, have led to the detention of numerous student activists.

Further controversy stems from Trump’s agreement with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, resulting in the deportation of hundreds of migrants—many without criminal backgrounds—to a notorious detention facility, a move that has provoked widespread condemnation among American citizens and global human rights organizations.

“We are rallying on May Day seeking a world where workers, students, immigrants, and the working class can prosper.”

“Billionaires target unions and immigrants out of fear of our collective strength. However, we are undeterred,” stated Jade Kelly, president of Communication Workers of America (CWA) 7799 in Colorado. “Our labor movement is cultivating something more potent than fear. May Day is more than a holiday; it’s a global worker mobilization, a reclaiming of its original spirit of solidarity with immigrants and a defense of all workers who sustain our communities.”

The May Day demonstrations will demand:

  • A cessation of the billionaire-dominated corruption within the Trump administration;
  • Adequate funding for public education, healthcare, and housing;
  • Protection and enhancement of Medicaid, Social Security, and other vital social services;
  • An immediate end to the persecution of immigrants, and marginalized communities including Black, Indigenous, and trans individuals;
  • Union rights, fair compensation, and respect for all workers.

Major rallies are set to occur in cities such as New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Atlanta.

Loan Tran, co-director of Rising Majority, criticized Trump and the billionaires benefiting from his policies, accusing them of urging Americans to forsake community solidarity for a future dominated by the ultra-rich and political elites.

“This May Day, we mobilize because we envision a society where workers, students, immigrants, and the working class flourish; a true democracy where activists like Mahmoud Khalil can freely express themselves, advocate for peace in Gaza, or demand government investment in public welfare over warfare,” Tran explained.

Tran concluded, “On May Day, we will counter these assaults with our collective power, striving for an authentic democracy in the U.S. that prioritizes the well-being of its people and the planet.”
