Georgia Supreme Court Blocks GOP Demand for Hand Vote Count

Georgia Supreme Court Denies GOP Request for Manual Vote Recount

On Tuesday, voting rights groups celebrated as the Georgia Supreme Court unanimously declined a Republican initiative to mandate a manual recount of votes and another measure that could postpone the certification of results for the upcoming November 5th election.

Previously, a ruling by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney had invalidated the State Election Board’s (SEB) policy on hand-counting votes. He decreed that local election officials are to certify election results regardless of any suspicions of “voter fraud” they might hold. Following this decision, both the Republican National Committee and the Georgia GOP swiftly sought an expedited review before Election Day.

As reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday, “The supreme court’s brief order upholds a prior decision by a Fulton County judge last week that declared seven new election regulations ‘illegal, unconstitutional, and void.’ The order also mentioned that the appeal may continue according to a normal timetable.”

Despite ongoing Republican efforts to challenge voting rights in Georgia, groups advocating for these rights have hailed the decision as a victory for the electorate. Democracy Docket has described the ruling as “a win for voters.”

Andrea Young, the executive director of the ACLU of Georgia, remarked, “This decision maintains the current system, preventing the SEB from introducing turmoil and uncertainty into our democratic processes.”

“We are thrilled by the high numbers of early voters in Georgia and are pleased that voters now can engage in this critical election without disturbances,” Young further commented.

Georgia is among the states where early voting has commenced and was notably targeted by former Republican President Donald Trump in his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Trump, who is currently facing a criminal case in Fulton County related to his misleading claims about the last election cycle, is once again the Republican candidate, this time running against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
