Iconic Sci-Fi Opening Scene Still Sends Chills Down Our Spines After 35 Years!

The scene opens in an ostensibly calm atmosphere… children are playing in a park, as in any ordinary everyday situation. They run and swing while the surrounding environment seems surprisingly peaceful.

Suddenly, a bright, blinding light floods the screen, and then the atmosphere shifts completely, becoming dark and apocalyptic. We are thrust into a future ravaged by war between humans and machines.

A Nightmarish Future

The urban landscape is destroyed, with charred car remains, a skull resting on a steering wheel, and a deadly silence. The mood is nightmarishly perfect. We learn that we have jumped to the year 2029 in Los Angeles.

Here, we see the remnants of this great Californian city. The buildings are gutted, the streets littered with debris, and the environment bears the marks of industrial warfare. The sky and atmosphere convey a feeling of cold, dust, and desolation.

The same park from the beginning is then shown, completely devastated, with skulls and skeletons scattered across what was once a playground for children. This shot immediately sends chills down our spines as Sarah Connor’s voice begins to echo.
