Why Netflix Will Stream the Fewest Movies Ever in 2026 – Here’s Why!

In 2026, Netflix released only 23 original films, marking its lowest output since 2018…

Known for its abundant offerings, Netflix has long been seen as a “mega-producer” flooding viewers with a plethora of content to ensure everyone finds something to their liking. However, a glance at the platform’s first quarter report of 2026 paints a different picture: it appears that Netflix is actually scaling down its production! What can we expect moving forward? Let’s dive in.

A Decline in Netflix Films?

According to our colleagues at Netflix & Numbers, who first reported on this, the platform has not offered as few original films to its subscribers in eight years! Looking closely at the data, this reduction didn’t happen overnight. Since the peak in 2022, which saw 50 original films released in the first quarter, Netflix has gradually decreased its output of feature-length films, now equaling the average of 2018. Several factors explain this decline.

First, there was a strategic shift in scheduling. In North America, Netflix secured a highly favorable deal with Hollywood producers Sony and Universal to stream their movies just a few months after their theatrical release. Consequently, there are fewer gaps in their calendar, reducing the need to produce their own films to keep customers engaged. Notably, many of the Netflix films watched by French viewers are American movies.

Additionally, Netflix’s production strategy has evolved: the platform now focuses on major blockbuster films (such as War Machine, Narnia, etc.), leaving less budget available for smaller or medium-sized projects. This approach mirrors recent trends in Hollywood, where studios have largely abandoned mid-budget films (those with budgets between $40 and $90 million) in favor of either very large or very small productions. In a way, Netflix has now become similar to any other movie studio.
