If You Love ‘The Sixth Sense,’ Get Ready for a New Netflix Series Directed by a Star-Studded Filmmaker!

A new psychological and supernatural thriller project, reminiscent of the ghostly tale from “The Sixth Sense,” is currently in the works for Netflix, developed by director Pablo Larraín (“Jackie,” “Spencer,” “Maria”).

Horror continues to be a favored genre for Netflix in its upcoming productions, especially when directed by masters and experts in the field.

Following Mike Flanagan with his numerous series (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, etc.) and Guillermo del Toro (Cabinet of Curiosities, Frankenstein), Pablo Larraín, known for his intense biopics (Neruda, Jackie, Spencer, and Maria), is now working on a new horror project for the platform.

Pablo Larraín’s New Project for Netflix

The Chilean screenwriter and director had previously tackled the vampire figure in The Count, a fantasy comedy that turned dictator Augusto Pinochet into a bloodsucker, which won the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2023.

Netflix acquired the international broadcasting rights for The Count and has given Pablo Larraín the opportunity to direct his new horror project titled My Sad Dead.

This four-part miniseries, based on the namesake short story by Argentine author Mariana Enríquez, tells the tale of Ema, a 60-year-old doctor who can see and hear the dead, whom she refers to as “presences,” though she tries to suppress them.

When her niece Julie, a troubled young woman with the same gift but a more intense and sexual undertone, comes to stay with her, Ema is forced to reconnect with her ability.

“I See Dead People”

According to the synopsis from Netflix, viewers can expect a psychological and supernatural thriller, echoing the iconic film The Sixth Sense starring Bruce Willis (remember, “I see dead people”):

“What starts as a family reunion turns into a series of disturbing events that disrupts the balance between the world of the living and the dead, infecting an entire neighborhood with voices from beyond. As the boundaries between life, death, and desire blur, Ema must confront her past, her daughter, and the ghosts she never let go.”

After exploring vampires, Pablo Larraín is now appropriating the figure of the ghost in his new project, which is likely to attract subscribers. My Sad Dead is produced by the director’s own label, Fabula, in collaboration with K&S Films, producers of the recent global hit The Eternaut on Netflix.

According to Variety, filming for My Sad Dead will start at the end of June in Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile, featuring a cast of Argentine stars, including Mercedes Morán (Neruda), Dolores Fonzi (Truman), and Alejandra Flechner (The Lost Brother).
