Stunning Battle Staged 30 Years Ago Declared Most Impressive of Its Decade!

Following the grand battle of Stirling, let’s revisit another epic confrontation that left an indelible mark on viewers of “Braveheart”.

On the lush green fields of Falkirk, a gentle breeze softly billows the banners of the Scottish troops. Opposite them, the English soldiers have arrived in full force, unusually accompanied by their King Edward the Longshanks. The battle that looms is set to be fierce. Yet beneath his helmet, William Wallace wears a confident smile.

Wallace’s First Defeat

The recent victory at Stirling and the sacking of York have bolstered his hopes, and the rebellion of his people now burns with an unstoppable fury. Furthermore, the upcoming battle has been meticulously planned. Pots of pitch ready to be ignited await the English cavalry in the middle of the plain. And the Scottish nobles have agreed to join the fight.

Masterfully depicted, the ensuing sequence is indeed spectacular. Just as brutal and bloody as Braveheart’s first battle, it unfortunately ends in a reversal of fortunes.

Truly tragic, both for Wallace and for the audience who watches in shock as the Scottish soldiers are decimated by the English troops, Falkirk marks a bitter defeat for the rebellion led by Mel Gibson’s character.

A Breathtaking Battle

Shamefully bribed by King Edward, the Scottish nobles (including Robert the Bruce) betray their promise, abandoning their allies at the critical moment of the battle.

With perfect pacing, a clarity not often seen in cinema, and enhanced by James Horner’s magnificent score, the sequence remains iconic three decades later.

And while the Wallace of Stirling, with his famous war paint and stirring speech, may have left a more significant imprint on the general public, the Wallace of Falkirk also deserves high praise.
