13 Years Ago, This Epic Battle Scene Redefined Cinema: Discover Why!

At the end of season 2 of “Game of Thrones,” creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff delivered to thousands of fans the series’ first real battle.

Night has fallen over King’s Landing, and as Tyrion watches from the city walls, the Blackwater Bay seems like a vast sea of oil. Unwaveringly, the formidable fleet of Stannis Baratheon advances toward the city’s walls. On board, the sailors appear confident, ready to enjoy an assured victory.

Wildfire on the Blackwater

But as they draw closer, at the bow of the lead ship, Commander Davos Seaworth spots another vessel moving in the opposite direction, towards them. Oddly enough: it is completely empty.

As a flaming arrow splits the air, shot by Bronn under Tyrion’s command, Commander Stannis realizes too late what is about to happen. Soaked in wildfire, a fuel that cannot be extinguished, the solitary ship bursts into flames, and in a greenish explosion, it takes half of the fleet with it.

Before even starting, the Battle of the Blackwater is already making waves!

Who says that the most impressive battles should only happen on the big screen? Certainly not David Benioff and D.B. Weiss!

In 2012, when it came to staging the first truly epic large-scale confrontation in Game of Thrones, the two creators of the series adapted from George R.R. Martin’s books pulled out all the stops to provide their audience with an extraordinary experience.
