Thus begins the immense Battle of the Pelennor Fields. This major event in the War of the Ring, pitting the Orcs of Mordor and their Haradrim allies against the Men of Gondor and Rohan, is undoubtedly the most spectacular segment of Peter Jackson’s trilogy, as well as one of the most impressive battles ever filmed.

This ruthless clash that spans over an hour of the movie starts with an exchange of projectiles between Mordor’s catapults and Minas Tirith’s trebuchets, operated under Gandalf’s command, who acts as the general during the battle: “Send these vile beasts back to the abyss!”

Then it’s time for the Nazguls to take center stage, spreading terror among the ranks of Gondor, followed by siege towers, manned by trolls, advancing against the walls of the White City. A true climax of The Return of the King, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields reaches its zenith when, at the dawn after a night of warfare, as the first rays of daylight pierce the horizon, the sound of a horn suddenly echoes across the plain, signaling the arrival of the Rohan cavalry to the rescue.

Their charge, led by Théoden, remains one of the most iconic scenes of the trilogy to this day. And the battle is far from over. Indeed, the formidable oliphaunts are next to challenge the Rohan soldiers, before receiving further reinforcements when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli finally arrive leading an army of the undead.
