James Cameron has recently secured the film rights to Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy novel “The Devils,” which he plans to direct following the release of Avatar 3.
With the third installment of his Avatar series, titled Fire and Ash, set to premiere on December 17th, James Cameron is already plotting his next move—and it looks like he’ll be taking a break from Pandora!
The director revealed on his Facebook page that he has purchased the film rights to Joe Abercrombie’s latest novel, “The Devils” (translated as “Les Diables” in French). Released on May 6th, this book is the first in “The Devils” series and immediately topped the Sunday Times best-seller list in the UK, while also ranking fifth on the New York Times best-seller list. Cameron will helm the project, with Abercrombie himself penning the screenplay.
British author Joe Abercrombie is renowned for his fantasy novels, including titles such as “Best Served Cold,” “The Heroes,” the “First Law” trilogy, the “Age of Madness” series, and “The Shattered Sea.”
The premise of “The Devils” is as follows: Europe is teetering on the brink. Devastated by plague and famine, stalked by monsters lurking in the shadows, power-hungry princes are fixated on their relentless ambitions. One thing remains certain: the elves will return, and they will consume everything.
In his post, James Cameron commented, “How to describe ‘The Devils’? A spirited horror adventure? An epic battle between good and evil, where it’s often hard to tell who’s who? A twisted, stylish journey into a different world, where your best hope for survival lies with the monsters themselves?
Joe Abercrombie is at the top of his game, creating a brand new world with engaging characters. The plot twists come at a breakneck pace, infused with Joe’s signature sharp-witted humor and style. ‘The Devils’ shines a spotlight on his keen insight into human nature, in all its dark and selfish glory, through characters that are anything but human. Yet, Joe always manages to weave in threads of redemption that make all this darkness captivating and poignant.”
Cameron continued, “I’ve been an admirer of Joe’s writing for years. Every new read, whether it’s the epic ‘First Law’ saga, ‘Best Served Cold’ (LOVE IT!), or the ‘Age of Madness’ trilogy, has always thrilled me. But the freshness of the world and characters in ‘The Devils’ finally pushed me to acquire the rights to one of his books and collaborate with him on adapting it for the big screen.
This will be a new challenge for me
I look forward to starting the writing process with him. I’m confident that this adaptation will practically write itself, as Joe writes in an incredibly visual, scene-by-scene manner with a highly cinematic structure. It will be a joyous new challenge for me after finishing ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ to bring these indelible characters to life.”
For his part, Joe Abercrombie stated, “James Cameron has been dazzling audiences for over forty years, myself included, by achieving the impossible on film. No one else can match his ability to balance spectacular action and visual spectacle with personal stakes and a deeply moving story. I can’t think of anyone better suited to bring to life the strange and wonderful beast that is my book.”
James Cameron will begin directing The Devils after the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash. No release date has been announced yet, but the fantasy film is expected to debut before Avatar 4, which is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2029.
