Jimmy Carter at 100: A Legacy of Boldness in the Israel-Palestine Dialogue
Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. President and the nation’s 39th leader, recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Throughout his extended career in public service, Carter has been a staunch advocate for peace and human rights both domestically and internationally.
As Carter approaches the final chapters of his life, it is crucial to reflect on one of his boldest and most significant commitments: his unwavering support for the rights and self-determination of the Palestinian people.
Back in 1996, President Carter stood in solidarity with the Palestinians as they participated in their inaugural leadership elections. Despite the shortcomings of the Oslo peace accord in establishing an independent Palestinian state, Carter saw the act of voting as a critical step towards forging a future founded on peace and justice.
Carter’s presence in Palestine during those elections highlighted our collective aspirations for a better future, despite the ongoing challenges of occupation and displacement.
Jimmy Carter’s unique stance on Palestine is underscored not just by his moral bravery but also by his past role as one of the most powerful leaders in the world.
In 2003, I had another opportunity to meet President Carter at the inaugural Human Rights Defenders Forum at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia. There, I shared with him the dire conditions in Qalqilia, a city in the West Bank where 40,000 residents are surrounded by a concrete barrier, with only one gate for accessing the outside world—a gate controlled by Israeli forces.
In 2005, Carter returned to Palestine to observe the presidential elections where I was a leading independent candidate. He saw firsthand the construction of divisive walls by Israel—barriers that not only physically segregated communities but also annexed vital resources and hindered peace efforts.
During his visit, after a meeting in Jerusalem, I was arbitrarily detained by Israeli security, an act that underscored the obstacles to political dialogue and peace. This experience, among others, solidified Carter’s understanding that Israel was entrenching control rather than preparing for peace.
In 2006, Carter made waves with his book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” He boldly argued that peace could not be achieved without recognizing Palestinian rights and dignity. Despite facing severe backlash and accusations of anti-Semitism, Carter remained steadfast, driven by a deep-seated belief in justice and the survival of Israel.
He recognized that Israel’s true prosperity could only come from a just peace with the Palestinians. Acknowledging the brutal realities of occupation and displacement faced by the Palestinians since 1967, and even earlier, Carter has consistently advocated for their rights.
In commemorating Carter’s life and legacy, let us echo his call for the U.S. to become a true agent of global peace and justice.
As tributes to Carter’s humanitarian efforts flood in during his centennial year, we must remember his role as a fearless advocate for the Palestinian cause. His willingness to address the harsh realities faced by Palestinians is a testament to a rare form of courage, particularly for a former U.S. President.
The most fitting tribute to Jimmy Carter’s bravery and ethical clarity is to continue his legacy of championing human rights for all.
The Palestinian quest for self-determination is fundamentally a moral issue. Carter consistently emphasized the special responsibility of the U.S., noting that without its political and military support, Israel’s oppressive policies and actions against Palestinians would be untenable.
As we celebrate and reflect on Carter’s contributions, let us amplify his plea for the U.S. to be a genuine force for peace and justice worldwide. Recognizing and respecting Palestinian rights is essential for true peace in what many consider the Holy Land, fulfilling Carter’s vision and honoring the principles he bravely championed.
