Explore the meaning behind the message on the car that disrupts a funeral in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” airing tonight on TF1.
“The Batman” is the latest cinematic installment featuring the iconic superhero from Gotham. Gone are Ben Affleck and Christian Bale, as Robert Pattinson now takes on the daunting role of the so-called “Dark Knight.”
Director Matt Reeves, known for his work on “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “War for the Planet of the Apes,” helms this new adventure of Batman, which also stars an unrecognizable Colin Farrell as the Penguin (who now has his own spin-off series), Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, and Paul Dano as the enigmatic Riddler.
It is the latter villain, the Riddler, who is central to the scene we’re discussing today: a moment of high tension crafted by Matt Reeves, featuring a detail that at first seems minor but reveals the playful yet menacing nature of the Riddler. This occurs during the dramatic car crash scene at the church.
Pause at 1 Hour and 3 Minutes
To set the scene, during Mayor Mitchell’s funeral, a car speeds into the crowd gathered at the service. Bruce Wayne narrowly saves a child from being hit and then observes the car, lodged on the church altar steps. Most notably, District Attorney Gil Colson is taped to the car with a bomb strapped to him, set to explode unless three of Riddler’s riddles are solved.
The car bears the painted letters “DOA.” In English, D.A. stands for District Attorney, which is Colson’s job. Add an “O” and you get “D.O.A.,” an abbreviation for “Dead On Arrival,” a term used by medical personnel when a patient is deceased upon reaching a hospital. This is the Riddler’s way of declaring he considers Colson as good as dead, while also playing a word game.
It’s a succinct portrayal of his character: a blend of playfulness and mortality.
