Marvel Star Reacts to Show’s Cancellation: ‘C’est la Vie’

A Surprising Cancellation

A major twist at Disney: while it was confirmed for renewal on March 23rd after its initial release, the Marvel series Wonder Man has been abruptly canceled!

First reported by Variety, the cancellation was later confirmed by the series’ lead actor, Yahya Abdul Mateen II himself. Known for his roles in the two Aquaman films, Candyman, and the series Watchmen, the actor simply stated on his social media: “Such is life, right? Everything will work out. I want to thank everyone who watched the series, enjoyed it, and expressed their appreciation in one way or another. The series was a success. […] So I’m thinking of all of you today. I’m glad we could be part of something great.”

And the actor concluded, not without a hint of irony: “Thank you for watching… And I’ll see you at the Emmys.” Indeed, this cancellation raises questions about the role of a show’s success in the decision to renew it. All signs were positive for Wonder Man: it had superior global viewership compared to other Marvel series, received rave reviews, including a 91% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and even earned Yahya Abdul Mateen II an Emmy nomination for 2027.

Although the actor remains positive, there is no doubt that fans of superhero stories will be disappointed, especially since the series was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the latest Spider-Man saga starring Tom Holland, which is currently a big hit in theaters. Let’s hope that the upcoming series VisionQuest, set to debut on Disney+ on October 14th, does not meet the same fate.
