Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight: a film directed by “Call Me by Your Name” filmmaker promises to captivate you with its sensuality.
Zendaya, currently one of Hollywood’s hottest stars with her roles in recent blockbusters like Dune, L’Odyssée, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, delivers another standout performance in Challengers. This intense romantic drama, directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino of Call Me by Your Name fame, is set against the backdrop of competitive tennis. Catch this film tonight on TFX!
A Modern “Jules et Jim” in the Tennis World
Released in theaters in 2024, Challengers tells the story of Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and Art (Mike Faist), who fall in love with Tashi (Zendaya, who Tom Holland spoiled Marvel secrets to) during their college years. As friends, lovers, and rivals, their paths cross again years later, bringing long-suppressed tensions to the surface.
With its creative direction and the palpable chemistry among the lead trio, Challengers is a gripping film. The modern-day Jules et Jim set in the tennis world showcases Zendaya in a magnetic and manipulative femme fatale role that you won’t soon forget.
A Controversial Tennis Match Sparks the Story
The idea for Challengers was inspired under unique circumstances. Justin Kuritzkes, making his cinematic debut as a screenwriter after establishing himself as a playwright, was struck by a controversial match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka in 2019.
“Watching the final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, I learned that the match was overshadowed by a coaching controversy,” he said. “I had never heard of this before, but it immediately struck me as great material for a film. At the same time, I began to really get into tennis and started watching matches from the ATP Challenger Tour, which is like the second division of professional tennis. It seemed like a fascinating world for two guys who had lost touch and then reunite.”
A Film Unfairly Overlooked That Deserves Your Attention
With a soundtrack by Trent Raznor and Atticus Ross, known for their work on The Social Network and Gone Girl by David Fincher, Challengers was a formidable challenge for Zendaya. To prepare for her role as a tennis star, she underwent four months of intense training with Brad Gilbert, a former professional player.
Interested in seeing Zendaya in a film that flew under the radar during its initial release in French theaters, attracting just over 500,000 viewers? Then step onto the court and dive into the enthralling game of Challengers—a film that will leave you deeply affected!
