Progressives Plan Major Swing State Campaign Blitz for Harris

Progressive Coalition Launches Major Campaign in Key States to Support Harris

With the U.S. general election just around the corner, the nation’s largest progressive political organization declared on Friday its goal to mobilize 5 million voters across seven key battleground states to oppose former Republican President Donald Trump.

Our Revolution is setting its sights on Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The group plans an intensive outreach through door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and text messaging campaigns leading up to the November showdown where Trump will face off against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

This push to energize voters follows a survey of over 1,400 Our Revolution members residing in these pivotal states. According to the organization, the survey revealed “concerning signals for the Harris campaign” and indicated “an active engagement of young and progressive voters by the Trump campaign.”

Joseph Geevarghese, the executive director of Our Revolution, which originated from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Democratic presidential bid, expressed concern on Friday. He highlighted that “with tight polling and an Electoral College that favors Trump, Our Revolution’s efforts to mobilize progressive voters in these crucial states could be pivotal.”

Election Dynamics and Voter Mobilization

Reflecting on the 2020 election results, Geevarghese pointed out that President Joe Biden “only narrowly defeated Trump by less than 300,000 votes across these states.” He emphasized the potential of Our Revolution’s 1.2 million supporters in these states to significantly influence the 2024 outcome.

Geevarghese also voiced concerns about a lack of enthusiasm among crucial voter segments, urging the Harris campaign to unveil impactful policy proposals that resonate with the progressive base. “In the upcoming weeks, Our Revolution will intensify its efforts to encourage the Harris campaign to adopt bold policies, as we do our utmost to prevent another detrimental Trump presidency,” he stated.

According to polling results first reported by Semafor, Our Revolution found that:

– 25% of its members in swing states are aware of progressives contemplating either abstaining from voting or opting for a third-party candidate.
– 75% believe Harris must articulate her policies more clearly and increase media appearances to convince undecided voters.
– 80% view celebrity endorsements as ineffective in swaying undecided voters.
– 80% perceive the escalating conflict in the Middle East as problematic for the Harris campaign.
– Two-thirds have experienced direct outreach from the Trump campaign, and 54% observe more Trump than Harris signs in their neighborhoods.

Since Biden endorsed Harris after a challenging debate against Trump, she has secured support from influential groups such as People’s Action, Popular Democracy, and the Working Families Party. Harris also received the first-ever endorsement from the youth-led March for Our Lives and has backing from various reproductive rights, labor, and climate organizations.

However, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters abstained from endorsing a candidate for the first time since 1996. Furthermore, the Uncommitted National Movement criticized Harris for her stance on U.S. military support in Gaza, stating her position made it “impossible for us to endorse her.”

The Uncommitted National Movement also clarified it opposes a Trump presidency and does not advocate for third-party voting in swing states due to the risks posed by the Electoral College system.

Despite suggestions that Harris could gain voter support by endorsing an arms embargo against Israel, there seems to be no direct effort from her campaign to engage with Uncommitted voters. Leaders from the movement reported being excluded from her recent discussions with Arab American and Muslim leaders in Flint, Michigan.

Continued Efforts and Upcoming Events

Efforts to rally support for Harris are ongoing, with Bernie Sanders and United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, whose union endorsed Harris, scheduled for multiple events in Michigan focusing on corporate greed, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Harris plans to visit North Carolina, recently hit by Hurricane Helene. The Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate advocacy group, aims to intensify its campaign to elect Harris, particularly focusing on North Carolina. Paul Campion, a Sunrise organizer, emphasized targeting young climate-concerned voters who are not regular voters, discussing the impact of climate policies on disasters like Helene.

Shiva Rajbhandari, a student organizer in North Carolina, expressed frustration over the environmental destruction and Trump’s dismissive attitude towards climate change, stating, “Big Oil just murdered 200 people. We know who’s to blame for the climate crisis, and we’ll hold them accountable this November.”
