“The Democratic Party Must Make a Critical Choice,” Asserts Independent Senator
“The Democratic Party is at a crossroads, and I’m not convinced they’ll choose wisely,” stated Vermont’s independent Senator.
“If we’re discussing whether America is a democracy, perhaps it’s more accurate to describe it as a ‘pseudo-democracy,'” remarked Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) during a Sunday morning interview with CBS News. He expressed concern over President Donald Trump’s comprehensive dismantling of federal agencies, his disregard for constitutional norms, and his empowerment of billionaires like Elon Musk to undermine public education, health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, and even Social Security.
Amidst his nationwide “Fight Oligarchy” tour, drawing unprecedented crowds from diverse political backgrounds, Sanders highlighted the deep-rooted issues within the U.S. political framework, blaming both major parties for the current state of affairs.
“Another major concern about oligarchy,” Sanders told journalist Robert Acosta, “is not only the extreme income and wealth inequality or the influence of the billionaire class. Influential figures, led by Musk and spurred by the catastrophic Citizens United Supreme Court decision, have essentially bought our political system. This is why when we talk about American democracy, we should perhaps call it a ‘pseudo-democracy’—and it’s not just the Republicans and Musk; billionaires within the Democratic Party are also complicit.”
While traveling, Sanders has sensed a common feeling of despair and frustration among Americans across all demographics.
“I’m witnessing fear and anger,” he shared. “Sixty percent of our population is living paycheck-to-paycheck, yet it’s hardly discussed by the media or even here in Congress.”
In a passionate Senate speech on Friday night, just before a Republican-majority passed a comprehensive spending plan that would slash vital programs like Medicaid and food assistance in favor of tax breaks for the wealthy, Sanders criticized, “We are faced with a budget that exacerbates dire circumstances and fails to address the needs of working families.”
The Republican spending strategy, Sanders added, “aims to enrich wealthy campaign donors by offering over $1 trillion in tax reductions for the wealthiest one percent.”
“I wish my Republican colleagues luck when they attempt to justify these decisions at town hall meetings—if they even dare to hold them—explaining why they believe it’s beneficial to provide tax cuts for billionaires while cutting Medicaid, education, and other essential services for working-class families,” he stated.
On Saturday, large-scale protests took place nationwide against the Trump administration’s assaults on government integrity, the economy, and democracy itself.
Many at these rallies also expressed disappointment with the Democrats’ failure to counter Trump effectively and to present a compelling alternative for the nation’s future. In his interview with CBS News, Sanders emphasized the critical questions the Democrats need to address.
“Why are the Democrats viewed so negatively?” he questioned. “Why has the working class largely abandoned them? What must be done to regain their trust? Do working people support Trump because he promises huge tax cuts for billionaires and cuts to Social Security and Medicare? I don’t think so. They’re hurting. The Democratic Party has talked a good game for years but hasn’t delivered. The Democratic Party needs to decide whose interests they truly represent—are they going to continue soliciting large donations from the very wealthy, or will they stand with the working class?”
Sanders’ “Fight Oligarchy” tour is set to continue next Saturday with stops planned in California, Utah, and Idaho over four days.
“Americans, whether they are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, do not want billionaires controlling our government or buying our elections,” Sanders declared. “That is why I am visiting districts held by Republicans across the Western United States. When we organize and fight back, we can overcome oligarchy.”
