Bernie Sanders Calls for a United Front Against Oligarchs
As the progressive movement in the United States continues to seek effective strategies to counter President-elect Donald Trump’s recent electoral win, Senator Bernie Sanders made a compelling declaration on Saturday. He emphasized the critical need to challenge the ruling oligarchy to prioritize the welfare of ordinary workers over the interests of wealthy elites in shaping the nation’s economy and political landscape.
Senator Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, attributed Trump’s electoral success to a political and economic system overwhelmingly influenced by the nation’s wealthiest individuals and major corporations. He highlighted that this system has led to severe wealth and power disparities.
“This is the embodiment of an Oligarchy,” Sanders remarked. “Currently, while 60% of Americans are barely making ends meet with each paycheck, just three multi-billionaires possess more wealth than the lower half of the entire American population.”
Sanders pointed out the alarming levels of control and ownership concentration in various sectors—from healthcare and financial services to food, transport, and housing—not seen since the Gilded Age. He noted, “An ever-shrinking number of colossal corporations dictate the production and pricing of what we consume.”
Sanders criticized the corporate media landscape where a handful of global conglomerates—approximately six—dominate about 90% of the U.S. media, shaping both information and entertainment. He also condemned a political system increasingly manipulated by billionaires who can funnel vast, often undisclosed sums of money into campaign coffers without accountability.
Lamenting recent election trends, Sanders said, “A mere 150 billionaire families have poured close to $2 billion into securing the election of their preferred candidates.” He stressed that such realities must be actively opposed.
“Our mission in the upcoming months and years is unequivocal. We need to defeat the oligarchs and establish an economy and government that serve everyone, not just a privileged few,” Sanders declared.
While Sanders did not specify strategies in his statement, he has suggested in various communications, including social media and interviews over the past week, that empowering the working class is essential to overcoming these powerful interests.
In a recent message to his supporters, Sanders posed several critical questions, reflecting on the future direction of their movement. These included strategies for expanding a diverse, multi-generational labor movement, transcending the limitations of the Electoral College through a 50-state strategy, addressing the implications of Citizens United, supporting labor union efforts, promoting independent candidates willing to challenge the status quo, enhancing social media use to counter misinformation, and engaging non-Democratic voters through nationwide listening tours.
In an interview with The Nation, Sanders expressed the urgent need to confront both the Democratic and Republican parties, which he believes are dominated by corporate interests and affluent donors. “We can’t settle for candidates who don’t prioritize the working class and resist big-money interests. We must support candidates who will,” Sanders asserted.
