Bernie Sanders Intensifies Battle Against U.S. Oligarchs
Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont is vigorously stepping up his campaign against what he terms the U.S. oligarchy. This campaign targets the nation’s richest individuals, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. Sanders accuses them of playing a significant role in a global competition that diminishes the political influence of people everywhere while forcing countless individuals into poverty, all for the sake of increasing the already staggering wealth of the rich.
In a video address on Friday evening, Sanders announced a forthcoming series aimed at exposing how “billionaire oligarchs” in the U.S. “exploit the global economy, buy our elections, evade taxes, and gradually dominate our government.” He expressed his bemusement at how mainstream commentators openly discuss oligarchic systems in other countries yet remain silent on similar structures at home.
“It’s odd that the term ‘oligarchy’ isn’t often used to depict what’s occurring in the United States, or indeed, globally,” Sanders noted. “But here’s the reality: Oligarchy is a worldwide issue, and its epicenter is right here in the United States.”
Bernie Sanders discusses the oligarchy
Sanders argues that despite the lack of coverage in mainstream media or discussion among most politicians, the truth is undeniable: “A tiny group of extremely rich billionaires possess and control a large segment of the global economy. That’s the end of the story. Furthermore, they increasingly possess and manipulate our government through a corrupt campaign finance system.”
Since the election of President-elect Donald Trump in November, Sanders has voiced his concerns more loudly about the Democratic Party’s failure to effectively address the dichotomy of a party that claims to represent working-class interests yet is deeply entangled with corporate entities and wealthy individuals who fund their campaigns.
Last month, in a communication to his followers, Sanders lamented that “merely 150 billionaire families spent close to $2 billion to influence the election of their preferred candidates” this year, contributing to both major political parties. He stressed that such a situation must be confronted.
As part of his renewed efforts announced on Friday, Sanders’ team revealed that the two-time Democratic presidential candidate would be organizing a series of discussions with top experts on various aspects of U.S. oligarchy. These discussions aim to lay bare the incoming Trump administration’s “connections to the billionaire class,” including their plans to further dismantle democracy, relax regulations, enrich themselves, and undermine public welfare.
“In my opinion,” Sanders stated, “the matter of oligarchy is the most critical issue our country and the world face today because it impacts every other issue.” He emphasized that the climate crisis, healthcare, worker rights, and poverty alleviation are all negatively affected by the powerful elite who govern the economy and political systems.
“My friends, you don’t need a PhD in political science to see that this isn’t democracy,” he concluded. “This is not about one person, one vote. This isn’t about all of us uniting to shape our future. This is oligarchy.”
