“The American people will not tolerate Trump pushing us towards oligarchy and authoritarianism. We will resist and triumph,” declared Sanders.
Following a massively attended “Fighting Oligarchy” event in Tempe, Arizona, earlier in the week, Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont, alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, hosted a rally in Denver, Colorado on Friday night. The event attracted over 34,000 attendees, marking it as the largest gathering either Sanders or Ocasio-Cortez has ever been part of.
An Independent, Sanders highlighted on social media that Friday’s turnout is a clear message that “the American people will not tolerate Trump pushing us towards oligarchy and authoritarianism. We will resist and triumph.”
Anna Bahr, the communications director for Sanders, noted that the senator’s previous largest rally was in Brooklyn, New York, back in 2016 during his presidential campaign.
Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, expressed on the internet that “something extraordinary is unfolding… Working people are uniting and standing up for our democracy. Thank you, Colorado!”
The rally, held at Denver’s Civic Center Park, saw both politicians reiterating the themes discussed in Arizona.
“The American populace is unequivocally rejecting an oligarchic society,” Sanders stated, as reported by Colorado Public Radio. “We refuse to allow the wealthiest individuals in the nation to overrun Washington, slashing budgets for the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration, and nearly dismantling the Department of Education just to provide over a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the top 1%.”
“Isolation makes it easier to turn against one another,” Ocasio-Cortez mentioned, according to CPR. “That’s why there’s an effort to keep us isolated, alone, and divided. Constantly scrolling through our phones, we’re led to believe the stranger next to us is an enemy, but that’s not the case.”
Sanders initiated his “Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here” tour in February, aimed at discussing with Americans about the “takeover of the national government by billionaires and large corporations, and the country’s shift towards authoritarianism.”
The ongoing “Fighting Oligarchy” events occur while some Democrats face significant feedback at local town halls, with constituents urging them to more vigorously oppose the Trump administration’s efforts.
Earlier the same day, Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders also hosted a rally in Greeley, Colorado—represented in the House by Republican Gabe Evans—which saw over 11,000 attendees.
Semafor reporter David Weigel, who attended both the Greeley and Denver rallies, shared online that at the Greeley event, it was challenging to find attendees who had voted for Sanders in the 2020 presidential primary. Weigel also relayed that the Sanders team informed him that half of the rally RSVPs were not from his supporter list.
Eric Blanc, an assistant professor at Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations, commented on Bluesky that “it is quite remarkable how AOC and Bernie have emerged as leaders not just for progressives, but for the mainstream liberal base of the Democratic Party.”
While he noted it’s concerning that “establishment liberals” are conceding to Trump, Blanc pointed out the “silver lining is that this has allowed anti-corporate entities like labor unions and the AOC-Bernie alliance to shape the tone of Resistance 2.0.”
“Today’s anti-Trump resistance, with its emphasis on economic issues, strong ties to labor unions, and anti-billionaire stance, has the potential to deeply resonate with working people and, ultimately, to decisively overcome MAGA,” Blanc wrote.
