“Helldivers,” a highly anticipated video game adaptation by gamers, is a feature film directed by Justin Lin, known for his work on several “Fast & Furious” installments! Originally scheduled for a November 2027 release, the sci-fi film has undergone a significant rescheduling, much to fans’ dismay.

“Helldivers” now set for a Summer 2028 cinema release!

According to Deadline, “Helldivers” will no longer hit theaters on November 10, 2027, but instead on June 9, 2028, a delay of seven months! This disappointing news was announced by Sony during the Cinema United autumn summit. Why the change?

It’s a minor reshuffling between two blockbusters. Ridley Scott’s upcoming film adaptation of “Treasure Island,” featuring Hugh Jackman as Long John Silver and Owen Cooper as Jim Hawkins and also produced by Sony, is now slated for the November 10, 2027 spot, originally occupied by “Helldivers.”

Justin Lin’s film will have to wait its turn. Releasing in the summer could be advantageous—or not, as the season is typically marked by fierce competition. Notably, on June 28, 2028, another major video game adaptation, Peter Berg’s “Call of Duty,” will premiere in theaters.

A film poised for success

This adaptation of the renowned 2015 PlayStation game, heavily inspired by “Starship Troopers,” immerses viewers in an intergalactic war. Elite soldiers will band together to defend Super Earth, a fictional planet threatened by fearsome alien creatures.

Initially, the film was to be led by Jason Momoa, but after a career lull post-“Game of Thrones,” he stepped down. Now, Alan Ritchson, known for his role in the series “Reacher,” is set to take the lead, exciting fans of the franchise.

Following its release, “Helldivers” sequel sold over 12 million copies on PS5 and PC within four months in 2024, indicating the massive anticipation surrounding the film. However, fans must now wait an additional seven months to see it on the big screen!
