Scarlett Johansson Slams Oscars for Snubbing $2.7 Billion Sci-Fi Blockbuster!

Having returned to the blockbuster scene with “Jurassic World: Dominion” and after directing her first feature film, Scarlett Johansson revisited a topic that clearly still irks her: the treatment of “Avengers: Endgame” by the Academy Awards.

In a 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, the actress expressed her bafflement over the lack of accolades for the Marvel film during award season. Despite its critical and commercial success, “Endgame” only received a single nomination for Best Visual Effects.

For Johansson, this oversight is hard to fathom: “How could this movie not be nominated for an Oscar?“

She believes the film’s achievement merited recognition in major categories, particularly Best Picture.

“It was an impossible movie that shouldn’t have worked, but it really works as a film – and it’s also one of the most successful films of all time.“

To date, “Black Panther” remains the only Marvel production to have received a Best Picture nomination.

Turning the Page on Black Widow

“Avengers: Endgame” holds a special place in Scarlett Johansson’s career. The film marked the end of Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, a character she had played since her introduction in “Iron Man 2” in 2010.

Although she later reprised the role in the solo film “Black Widow,” released during the pandemic, the actress does not foresee a return to the Marvel Universe.

Asked about the possibility of her character’s reappearance, she reaffirmed her stance: “I would have a hard time seeing how a return would be relevant for me, for the character I play.“

Johansson acknowledged, however, that she still holds a strong attachment to her former co-stars: “I miss my friends and would really love to be with them forever, but the great thing about this character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to disrupt that. It’s important for the fans as well.“

Oscars in the Crosshairs

Even though she attended the Oscar ceremony shortly before her comments last year with June Squibb, star of her film “Eleanor The Great,” Scarlett Johansson did not hold back in her criticism of the event.

The length of the ceremony was among her main complaints: “Why was it so long?“

Broadly, she feels that the issue now affects a part of the film industry: “Movies are so long now – they’re too long, don’t you think? It feels like a chore.“

An Unconvincing Tribute to James Bond

During the interview, Vanity Fair brought up the tribute to James Bond at the 2025 ceremony, a segment that had elicited mixed reactions from viewers.

Without mincing words, Johansson hinted that she was not impressed by the segment: “No comment. It felt like a commercial placement. It was odd. People were asking, ‘What was that all about?’“

The tribute featured performances by singers RAYE, Lisa, and Doja Cat, while Margaret Qualley participated in a choreographed number. The segment received polarized responses, prompting RAYE to address the criticism by stating: “I did my best.“

A Busy Schedule Between Directing and Blockbusters

After presenting “Eleanor The Great” at the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, Scarlett Johansson returned in front of the camera in Gareth Edwards’ “Jurassic World: Dominion” in July 2025, alongside Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali. The blockbuster is now available for streaming on MyCanal.

Regarding “Eleanor The Great,” featuring June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film was released in November 2025 and is available on VOD.

Scarlett Johansson will soon be seen in “The Exorcist” by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House), due in theaters in 2027, as well as “The Batman II” by Matt Reeves, alongside her former Marvel colleague, Sebastian Stan.
