Alain Chabat, a maestro whose comedies have entertained millions in France, is also a devoted cinephile. He has a particular fondness for a science fiction film released 11 years ago, which he praises highly!
A revered director and beloved actor, Alain Chabat is a true movie enthusiast! In June 2019, during an appearance on Konbini’s Vidéo Club, he discussed many films that have been significant throughout his career. Although Chabat is a comedy specialist, he is equally an admirer of a completely different genre: science fiction!
Chabat’s Favorite
The filmmaker expressed his profound love for George Miller’s 2015 blockbuster, Mad Max: Fury Road! “It was insane. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It completely shattered all conventions,” Alain Chabat remarked.
I don’t know how George Miller does it at his age, and keeps up the pace.
“Normally, the hero was supposed to do this, but no, he turns back! I can’t even imagine the chaos of shooting it. I don’t know how George Miller manages it at his age, and keeps up the pace,” he concluded.
A Sci-Fi Classic
To recap, Fury Road features Mad Max, played by Tom Hardy. Haunted by a tormented past, Max believes the best way to survive is to go it alone. However, he ends up joining a group that navigates the Wasteland in a war rig driven by Imperator Furiosa, portrayed by Charlize Theron.
They are fleeing from the Citadel, ruled by the fearsome Immortan Joe who has had an irreplaceable item stolen. Furious, the warlord sends his forces to ruthlessly pursue the rebels… Rated 4.2 out of 5 by viewers on AlloCiné, Fury Road was extremely well-received upon its release in 2015, quickly becoming a sci-fi classic.
With a budget estimated at $150 million, it grossed $380 million internationally, sparking the idea for a sequel. Eventually, George Miller chose to create a prequel centered on the character of Furiosa, released in 2024. Unfortunately, this subsequent installment was a major flop, earning only $174 million globally against a budget of $168 million.
