Staunch Defense of Democratic Principles Amidst Political Intimidation
On Saturday, a group of advocacy organizations rallied behind Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin, highlighting what they describe as a perilous increase in aggressive tactics by the Trump administration’s border czar against the Democratic governor. This, they argue, is part of a broader assault on the rule of law throughout the country.
Organizations such as All Voting Is Local and the ACLU of Wisconsin issued a collective statement defending Governor Evers’ advice to state officials on how to interact with federal agents. The groups praised the governor’s guidance as a wise step to ensure adherence to both state and federal laws while safeguarding the rights of state workers.
The comments by Tom Homan, who spearheads President Donald Trump’s extensive deportation efforts, suggesting the potential arrest of Governor Evers for his advisory, strike at the heart of democratic principles, including the separation of powers, rule of law, and the sovereignty of state governance against undue federal intrusion, the advocacy groups noted.
“To issue threats against our governor for his lawful instructions represents a severe overstep by the federal government, and it doesn’t stand alone,” the statement read, indicating that these actions and rhetoric from the administration are part of a broader, alarming trend to legitimize authoritarianism.
The organizations also pointed to similar incidents occurring nationwide, including in educational settings, emphasizing the urgent need to oppose these measures. “If these actions are not contested, states and other bodies will continue to see their independence and authority eroded. This is precisely why we emphasize how troubling this incident with Governor Evers is,” they added.
The threats against Gov. Evers in Wisconsin undermine the foundational principles of our democracy: the separation of powers, the rule of law, and the right of state governments to operate without undue federal interference. We must reject this overreach.

Trump administration officials, including the president himself, have increasingly targeted state and local authorities, intensifying their controversial deportation drive, which has impacted tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants and even several U.S. citizens—children included.
In a recent executive order, President Trump accused certain local and state officials of a “lawless insurrection” against the federal government for their refusal to support the administration’s deportation initiatives.
Jennifer Lee, a law professor at Temple University, recently pointed out that local jurisdictions have the legal right to choose non-cooperation with federal immigration authorities. “Municipalities, like states, are shielded by constitutional safeguards against being compelled to implement or enforce federal mandates,” Lee stated. She added that the Trump administration cannot coerce state or local officials into enforcing immigration laws.
This year has also seen threats directed at members of Congress. Earlier, Homan mentioned he might refer Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to the U.S. Justice Department after she hosted a webinar to educate her constituents about their rights.
During a town hall meeting on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez challenged Homan’s threat directly. “To that I say: Come for me,” she proclaimed to applause from the audience. “We need to stand up to them. Don’t let them frighten you,” she urged.
