Ana de Armas Weeps Through Entire Movie! Declares It a 25-Year-Old Masterpiece

Sharing a list of favorite films has become almost a standard ritual for celebrities on promotional tours. Ana de Armas recently participated in this tradition, revealing her top four movies to the website Letterboxd…

Revealing one’s favorite movies has turned into a commonplace practice for celebrities on the promotion circuit. On the red carpet, time constraints make it difficult to delve into such a list. However, the exercise becomes intellectually more engaging when artists have ample time to discuss their choices and their relationships with the films, which might even inspire the audience to explore these works. Video formats like the esteemed Criterion Closet (whose latest guest is Ben Affleck) or Konbini’s videoclub are good examples of this.

The community-driven site Letterboxd has also specialized in consistently asking talents to list their favorite films, specifically four of them. Most recently, actress Ana de Armas shared her selections while promoting her upcoming film Ballerina, a spin-off set in the John Wick universe.

“It’s hard to pick just four, because it feels like so few…” she commented.

Her choices cover a wide range. She first mentions Pulp Fiction by Tarantino. “A classic. The plot, the acting performances, everything is perfect in this movie.” She then makes an intriguing pick, the American remake of La Cage aux Folles released in 1996, which starred Gene Hackman and Robin Williams. “I could watch it over and over again” she continues.

Her third film choice will likely find wide agreement. It’s The Deer Hunter by Michael Cimino. “This movie has one of the most beautiful party scenes I’ve ever seen,” says the actress, referring to the famous wedding scene.

Filled with a powerful sense of melancholy and delivered by extraordinary actors at their best, including an Oscar-winning performance by Christopher Walken among its five awards, The Deer Hunter is often hailed as one of the greatest films in American cinema, and indeed in global cinema.

Finally, Ana de Armas reveals she is a great admirer of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, especially Princess Mononoke; a movie she first saw in a theater in Madrid. “I cried throughout the entire film,” she says, “it’s absolutely incredible, truly great cinema.”

Released in the summer of 1997 in Japan (and two and a half years later in French theaters), Princess Mononoke is unquestionably one of the most striking works by the Japanese master. An absolute masterpiece of animation, it has played a significant role in promoting Studio Ghibli internationally. With an average rating of 4.385 out of 5, it is considered the eighth best animated film of all time according to user ratings.
