This Wednesday, October 8, Disney+ releases “The Vanished of the Station,” a gripping drama based on a true crime story starring Camille Razat, Hugo Becker, and Mélanie Doutey.
For several years now, French crime stories have been a staple on television. Following “Oussekine,” a mini-series revisiting the death of Malik Oussekine, Disney+ now turns its attention to another significant true crime event with “The Vanished of the Station,” available from this Wednesday, October 8, on the platform.
Created by Gaëlle Bellan, known for her work on “The Bureau” and “Spiral,” this six-episode series follows the prolonged pursuit of a suspected serial killer believed to have murdered four young women near the Perpignan train station.
Adapting a True Crime Event
Between 1995 and 2001, one teenager vanished and three young women were murdered around the Perpignan train station. The victims, women between the ages of 17 and 23, were all abducted following a specific modus operandi.
Flore Robin, portrayed by Camille Razat, is an ambitious young investigator who arrives at the police station on the day the first body is found. She teams up with Police Captain Franck Vidal (Hugo Becker), and Felix Sabueso (Patrick Timsit), a sidelined officer, to track down the perpetrator.
Simultaneously, “The Vanished of the Station” also follows Marie-Josée Andujar (Mélanie Doutey), the mother of the missing girl, as she struggles to uncover what happened to her daughter. For over 15 years, the police did everything in their power to find those responsible for these dreadful disappearances.
A Heart-Wrenching and Thrilling Investigation
Tackling a true crime story that impacted an entire generation is no easy task. Yet, in “The Vanished of the Station,” Gaëlle Bellan delivers a poignant and modern drama that resonates strangely with today’s society.
Over six episodes, the series follows the extensive police investigation, complicated by the limited resources of the time. Far from being voyeuristic, the beautifully directed series by Virginie Sauveur also focuses on the victims and their families, especially the Andujar family, who still seek answers to Tatiana’s disappearance in 1995.
This adaptation highlights the story of Marie-Josée, a courageous mother brilliantly portrayed by Mélanie Doutey, who agreed to have her painful story adapted for the screen. Through this shattered family, Gaëlle Bellan emphasizes the difficulty of rebuilding and moving on after such a loss.
In terms of casting, Camille Razat plays Flore, a hopeful young policewoman who faces the challenges of the investigation head-on. Departing from her role in “Emily in Paris,” Razat embraces a much more dramatic character that suits her perfectly.
She is joined by Hugo Becker, currently seen in the series “Montmartre,” who plays a commander sacrificing his family life to lead the investigation. Patrick Timsit, Kevin Azaïs, and Yannick Choirat round out this stellar cast.
With “The Vanished of the Station,” Disney+ delivers a captivating and realistic thriller that is bound to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
