The highly anticipated series The Penguin has made waves as a standout adaptation in the superhero genre, steering clear of formulaic tropes and embracing a darker, grittier Gotham. While Colin Farrell is back to portray the titular Penguin, fans may notice a shift in another major character’s portrayal: Carmine Falcone. Originally played by the talented John Turturro in The Batman, the role now belongs to Mark Strong. Turturro recently shared why he declined to reprise his role, shedding light on both creative and moral reasons that led to his decision.
A Change in Casting for The Penguin
In an interview with Variety, John Turturro explained his reasons for not returning as the mob boss Carmine Falcone. Known for his ability to bring depth to morally complex characters, Turturro felt that the portrayal of Falcone in The Penguin went further than he was comfortable with. While The Batman hinted at Falcone’s ruthless nature, much of the violence associated with his character occurred off-screen, creating a chilling effect without explicit brutality. Turturro explained that in the new series, Falcone’s cruelty is shown explicitly, particularly in scenes involving violence against women, something the actor found deeply unsettling.
“I did what I wanted with the role [in the movie],” he stated. “In the series, there was a lot of violence toward women, and that’s not my thing.” This stark perspective clarifies Turturro’s stance: he was unwilling to embody a character whose actions cross into such morally uncomfortable territory.
A Discrepancy in Reasons for Turturro’s Absence
Interestingly, Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner for The Penguin, offered a different explanation for Turturro’s absence. In a September 2024 interview with IGN, she attributed his departure to scheduling conflicts rather than creative differences. “John just wasn’t available at the time,” she remarked. “We had a tight schedule, and he couldn’t make it back, but honestly, I’m thrilled we were able to cast Mark Strong. He brings a different weight to the character.”
This difference in narratives leaves room for speculation, with Turturro emphasizing his ethical boundaries while LeFranc frames it as a logistical decision. It’s possible both elements played a role, with Turturro’s values aligning with a schedule that couldn’t accommodate his return.
Turturro’s New Direction in Film
With his departure from The Penguin, Turturro is redirecting his energy toward roles that resonate with him on a deeper, more socially conscious level. He’s set to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming film The Room Next Door, a drama that captured the Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Turturro plays an aging yet passionate character, embodying themes of resilience and vitality. Scheduled for release on January 8, 2025, the film promises to showcase his talent in a role that leans more toward societal impact, a direction he’s eager to explore.
For fans of The Batman and the darker side of Gotham, The Penguin is currently streaming on HBO Max, with Mark Strong now donning the mantle of Gotham’s infamous crime boss. Whether Turturro’s moral stance or LeFranc’s production deadlines were the final determining factor, it’s clear that both the actor and the character will continue to evolve—just along different paths.
