Every day, AlloCiné suggests a film to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight’s pick: a meeting between attackers and victims in an attempt to seek amends.
In “I Will Always See Your Faces,” Nassim, Issa, and Thomas, convicted of violent thefts, join Grégoire, Nawelle, and Sabine, victims of home invasions, robberies, and snatch thefts, along with Chloé, a victim of incestuous rapes, in participating in “restorative justice” measures.
Engaging with One’s Attacker
Restorative justice, a practice implemented in France since 2014, allows crime victims and perpetrators to engage in dialogue within secure settings, overseen by professionals and volunteers, portrayed in the film by Élodie Bouchez, Suliane Brahim, and Jean-Pierre Darroussin.
The film particularly follows Chloé (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a victim of incestuous rapes by her older half-brother Benjamin. After serving three years in prison for these crimes, which he admitted to, Chloé seeks to confront him. She needs answers to lingering questions and to set boundaries, as they live in the same town.
Benjamin’s character, played by Raphaël Quenard, appears in a singular, emotionally charged scene. Opposite a compelling Adèle Exarchopoulos (winner of the César Award for Best Supporting Actress), Quenard’s performance is nearly silent, with his expressive gaze delivering remarkable accuracy.
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on AlloCiné
Other victims of assaults featured in the film include Gilles Lellouche, Leïla Bekhti, and Miou-Miou, alongside Dali Benssalah, Birane Ba, and Fred Testot as perpetrators. Their dialogue and shared experiences may lead them towards some form of redress and peace.
Directed with precision by Jeanne Herry, “I Will Always See Your Faces” has an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 from viewers on AlloCiné, and upon its release in April 2023, it drew an audience of 1.16 million.
