Sean Duffy Nominated as Transportation Secretary by Donald Trump
On Monday, the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump declared his choice of Sean Duffy to head the Department of Transportation, making Duffy the second personality from Fox News to be slated for a Cabinet position, following Pete Hegseth’s nomination as Defense Secretary.
Duffy, who shares a background in reality TV with the former president, first gained public attention through his appearances on MTV‘s “The Real World: Boston” and “Road Rules: All Stars.” He later served as the district attorney for Ashland County, Wisconsin, for eight years.
Following his tenure as district attorney, Duffy was elected as a Republican congressman for Wisconsin. He stepped down from the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019 and joined Fox the next year. His wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, is also associated with the network.
Trump praised Duffy in a detailed statement, saying, “During his tenure in Congress, Sean was a prominent and effective communicator within the Republican Conference, championing Fiscal Responsibility, Economic Expansion, and Rural Development. He is well-respected across party lines, having collaborated with Democrats to overcome significant legislative challenges and initiate the largest road and bridge project in the history of Minnesota.”
Trump continued, “As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Sean was instrumental in crafting and improving Economic policies, promoting Transparency, and ensuring Accountability in Government initiatives. He has also been a staunch advocate for the needs of families, farmers, and small enterprises, particularly in rural areas.”
“With his leadership, Sean will focus on Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness, and Aesthetic quality in the renewal of America’s highways, tunnels, bridges, and airports,” Trump added. “He will ensure that our ports and dams bolster our Economy while safeguarding our National Security, and he will restore safety to our skies by removing DEI considerations from the recruitment of pilots and air traffic controllers.”
The term DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion, a set of policies aimed at ensuring representation and fairness for people from diverse backgrounds. This approach has recently been scrutinized and criticized by many Republicans.
Media Matters for America senior fellow Matthew Gertz remarked on Monday, “Trump seems to be treating Fox like a staffing firm. Duffy marks the sixth administration appointee announced who is currently or has previously been affiliated with the network.” Gertz also noted, “Apart from his ‘Road Rules’ stint, Duffy’s actual experience with transportation includes attributing Boeing’s problems to DEI initiatives.”
Yonah Freemark, a senior research associate at the Urban Institute’s Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center, expressed skepticism about Duffy’s qualifications for the transportation role on social media, stating, “It’s challenging to pinpoint any significant experience in transportation in Duffy’s background.”
Freemark also pointed out that Duffy’s congressional voting record earned him a mere 2% lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters, a score even lower than Lee Zeldin’s 14%, another Trump nominee set to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.
“He appears to deny that human activity contributes to climate change,” added Freemark. “(And transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.)”
To officially secure the role of Transportation Secretary, Duffy needs confirmation from the Senate, which will soon be under Republican control, unless Trump follows through with his plans to bypass this requirement through recess appointments.
As reported by The Associated Press on Monday, the Department of Transportation is responsible for managing the vast U.S. transportation network, which includes everything from pipelines and railroads to vehicles and public transit systems, as well as federal funding for highways.
The department also houses the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees automotive manufacturers like Elon Musk’s Tesla, sets fuel economy standards, and regulates the airline industry through the Federal Aviation Administration.
Musk, who has been a significant supporter of Trump and is the wealthiest person globally, was recently announced by the president-elect to co-lead the yet-to-be-established Department of Government Efficiency alongside billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, another supporter from his campaign.
