On April 26, 2021, the second season of Hippocrate, Canal+’s flagship medical series created by Thomas Lilti, concluded after eight thrilling episodes. The season saw characters Arben (Karim Leklou), Alyson (Alice Belaïdi), Hugo (Zacharie Chasseriaud), and Chloé (Louise Bourgoin) dealing with the integration of an emergency department into their internal medicine service.

In the final moments of episode 8, mirroring the real-world hospital situations at that time, the team had to manage an influx of patients affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After over three years of waiting, Hippocrate is poised to make its grand return this Monday, November 11, on Canal+ with the airing of the first two episodes of Season 3. But why was there such a long wait between seasons?

Three Years Between Season 2 and 3

It’s well-known that unlike American screenwriters, who typically release a season annually, French writers often have a tendency to make viewers wait between seasons.

And Hippocrate is no exception. The wait had already been lengthy between Seasons 1 and 2, largely due to the Covid pandemic, which interrupted filming and delayed production. But what explains this delay for Season 3?

“This time between the seasons is my time,” Thomas Lilti explained during a press meeting. “I would obviously like to move faster, because I understand that there is always an anticipation from the audience for recurring series.“

“But to write the scripts, I need to find something worth telling. It took me a while to decide that this was the topic I wanted to explore. And for me, that’s the most important thing, and that’s what explains the time it took me to write.“

“There are also practical issues, such as the availability of the actors, but that’s almost secondary.” This lengthy delay, therefore, allows the creator to offer seasons that are consistently of high quality.
