The writer of an unreleased episode from this major science-fiction series from the 2000s hinted that his work might soon be made public.
Who recalls the Doctor Who episode featuring David Tennant that was set in the British Museum during one of the World Wars? Even the most devoted fans won’t remember such an episode because it was never aired!
What Was This Episode About?
Indeed, this adventure starring the Tenth Doctor nearly came to fruition. Titled The Suicide Exhibition, this never-seen episode was close to beginning production before it was ultimately shelved by the producers. Its writer, Mark Gatiss (also known for portraying Mycroft Holmes in the series Sherlock), shared some details with Radio Times.
Describing the plot as a tribute to the Indiana Jones saga, the English author revealed that the script underwent several revisions. “I wrote two versions, one set during World War I, the other involving Nazis. I switched from one war to the other,” he explained, adding that he thought the script was “quite good.”
Script Publication Discussions Are Underway
Though the episode was on the verge of entering production, it was not ultimately chosen for development. This explains why Doctor Who fans have no memory of it. However, there’s still hope for its discovery, as Mark Gatiss has kept this unreleased script and hopes to publish it. The writer has discussed this possibility with the publisher Big Finish, but no agreement has been signed yet.
Without a doubt, fans of the series will make their voices heard, eager for this never-seen episode featuring the Doctor as portrayed by David Tennant to be published. Releasing it would fill the long gap until the series resumes, which is on hiatus until Christmas 2026. The poor viewership of the last two seasons convinced Disney not to extend their broadcasting agreement with the BBC.
On Break, When Will Doctor Who Return?
Despite rumors, Doctor Who has not been cancelled by the BBC. After the Christmas Special in 2026, the series will return the following year with a brand new lead actor or actress.
As a reminder, the most recent episode concluded with the Doctor’s regeneration into Ncuti Gatwa (a process allowing the character to change actors periodically) and the surprise return of Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler in the early seasons of the series starting in 2005.
Also noteworthy is the spin-off series The War Between the Land and the Sea, which will be available starting next December on Disney+.
