Will the series “Young Sherlock,” which delves into the early years of the famed detective, return for a second season on Prime Video?
On March 4, Prime Video subscribers were treated to the release of all eight episodes of “Young Sherlock.” This fresh take on the adventures of Sherlock Holmes (played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin) focuses on the detective’s youth, particularly his first encounter with his future archenemy, James Moriarty (played by Dónal Finn).
An Unofficial Prequel to the Robert Downey Jr. Movies
This modern reinterpretation of the Sherlock Holmes legend is not based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s writings, but on Andrew Lane’s books, “The Young Sherlock Holmes.” These novels are especially popular among younger readers and serve as a perfect gateway to the world of the future occupant of 221B Baker Street.
The series also serves as a consolation to fans of Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. While fans are still waiting for the third movie, this show acts as an unofficial prequel, being produced and directed by Guy Ritchie, who directed the previous films. Ritchie’s dynamic and visual style is employed here to reflect the irreverent personality of the young protagonist.
Nearly two weeks after its debut, the series has climbed to the second spot on Amazon’s list of most-watched series globally, and it’s number one in France. This success brings up the possibility of a follow-up season. With the series based on eight books, there’s potential for more seasons to emerge.
Green Lights All Around, but Amazon Has Yet to Decide
The first season ends on a cliffhanger, indicating that a continuation is already in the creator Matthew Parkhill’s mind. The English screenwriter has confirmed that multiple seasons are planned, but the decision to renew “Young Sherlock” ultimately rests with Prime Video. Thus, the show’s viewership will determine whether a second season will be produced.
As of now, Amazon’s executives have not made a decision. The series maintaining a top spot in the rankings seems positive, although the exact viewership details are not disclosed. Fans will need to wait a bit longer to find out if “Young Sherlock” season two will be greenlit.
In the meantime, the first eight episodes of “Young Sherlock” are available exclusively on Prime Video.
