Massive Loss of Life in Gaza Due to Israeli Airstrikes
A substantial number of Palestinians, including a large family, perished in a recent series of airstrikes by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the southern Gaza Strip. This follows another tragic event at a hospital in northern Gaza, where several children died due to oxygen supply disruptions caused by the attacks.
According to a report by Reuters on Friday, the IDF’s ongoing operations across Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 72 Palestinians since Thursday night. The strikes in Khan Younis tragically wiped out at least 38 members of the al-Farra family, including 14 children and several women. Reports from various local and international news sources indicate the children suffocated but were found with their bodies intact.
Critics of the Biden administration have voiced strong discontent, pointing out the substantial military aid the U.S. provides to Israel and its diplomatic protection of ongoing military actions. These supporters include prominent figures who accuse the U.S. of backing the Netanyahu-led Israeli government’s severe tactics in Gaza.
Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, expressed his dismay in a statement on Friday. He criticized the U.S. administration’s unwavering support for what he referred to as genocide in Gaza, questioning the ethical boundaries of such support amidst the killing of children and babies.

Awad further questioned the extent of offenses the Biden administration would accept before withdrawing its support for Israel, suggesting that there seems to be no limit to the atrocities they are willing to justify.
The extended 385-day assault on Gaza, which is now the subject of a genocide case at the International Court of Justice, has devastated the region, leaving thousands of children dead, injured, or missing, and displacing or severely affecting hundreds of thousands more. Experts describe the psychological impact on Gaza’s children as total devastation.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) now labels Gaza as the most perilous place in the world for children. This year, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres included Israel in his annual “list of shame,” which names countries responsible for grave harm to children during conflicts.
The conflict has resulted in nearly 43,000 Palestinian deaths, primarily women and children, with over 100,000 injured and thousands more believed to be buried under destroyed structures.
Israeli forces also targeted the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, assaulting the facility repeatedly, which led to significant damage and casualties. According to Al Jazeera, this attack caused the death of several children due to the lack of oxygen. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia of the hospital conveyed to CNN the dire situation, noting that instead of aid, they were confronted with military aggression.
On Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over losing contact with the hospital staff amid these attacks, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation given the number of people reliant on the hospital for shelter and medical care.
The IDF claims that their actions at Kamal Adwan Hospital were informed by intelligence about terrorist activities, asserting that they have facilitated evacuations and maintained emergency services. However, Dr. Abu Safia reported severe shortages in medical supplies and staff, leading to further loss of life.
UNICEF’s James Elder highlighted the excruciatingly slow pace of medical evacuations from Gaza, stressing that at the current rate, it would take over seven years to evacuate all the children in need of urgent medical care. Elder criticized the disregard for the urgency needed to save these children’s lives.
Fikr Shalltoot, director of Medical Aid for Palestinians in Gaza, condemned the assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital as another devastating blow by Israel to Palestinian existence in Gaza, leaving many patients without critical care and healthcare workers in fear for their lives.
The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory recently concluded that Israel has systematically targeted Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure, committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
As international pressure mounts, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a meeting with Arab leaders in London, promised to pursue a ceasefire with “real urgency.” Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi at the meeting pointed out the apparent ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza, urging immediate action to halt these practices.
Amidst these discussions, many believe Israel is pursuing a deliberate strategy, referred to as the “General’s Plan,” aiming at the starvation and forced removal of Palestinians from northern Gaza, a policy discussed openly at recent conferences attended by Israeli officials and public figures.
