Sing 3 Returns: Billion-Dollar Franchise Delights Fans with New Movie!

The head of Illumination Studio has just announced that a third installment of the animated sagas “Sing” and “The Secret Life of Pets” is on the way.

Are the singing animals making a comeback to the big screen? While promoting “Minions & More,” which premieres this Wednesday in theaters, Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, confirmed to Collider, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, that “Sing 3” and “The Secret Life of Pets 3” are both in active development at the studio.

A Third “Sing” Movie

Released in 2016, the first “Sing” movie earned $634 million worldwide and had 3.5 million viewers in France alone. Five years later, its sequel garnered $408 million at the global box office and attracted 2.7 million viewers in France—a notable achievement as movie theaters were still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.

A third film is officially in the works. When asked about the studio’s projects, Chris Meledandri stated that both “Sing 3” and “The Secret Life of Pets 3” were “both in the active development phase.” Regarding “Sing 3,” he explained: “Garth Jennings, who was the writer and director of the previous films, is currently dedicating himself, along with the Illumination team, to creating what I am confident will be a ‘Sing’ movie that pays tribute to everything we love about this saga, while introducing completely new ideas into the story.”

“The Secret Life of Pets”: A Third Installment Planned!

About “The Secret Life of Pets 3,” the producer added: “It took us some time to return to ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ because we were waiting to have the right idea, rather than just making another film in the series. And I think we’ve found a good approach.

We are working on it with Chris Renaud, who was not only the co-director of ‘Despicable Me’ with Pierre Coffin but also directed the first installment of ‘The Secret Life of Pets.’ We are well underway and hard at work on an idea that I hope will materialize soon.”

The first “The Secret Life of Pets,” released in the summer of 2016, earned $875 million at the global box office. Its sequel, released three years later, totaled $431 million.

We will likely have to wait a while before seeing the first images of these two sequels. In the meantime, “Minions & More” is hitting theaters this Wednesday.
