Following the storms of the past, Mel Gibson returns to directing. Andrew Garfield, who collaborated with him on the movie “Hacksaw Ridge,” pays tribute to a man and a director whom he believes deserves another chance.
Last year, while promoting his latest film “The Present Love,” Andrew Garfield shared in an interview with People about a significant experience in his career: his work with Mel Gibson on “Hacksaw Ridge,” released in 2016.
The British actor retains vivid memories of this cinematic journey alongside the director, whom he has defended against the critics that marred Gibson’s career in 2006. For Garfield, this project was not just an artistic performance but also a lesson in humanity.
“I learned a lot [from working with him]. I learned that people can heal, that people can change, that help is available. I learned that everyone deserves respect. And that people deserve a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance. I learned that none of us are infallible.”
A Compassionate View on a Tumultuous Past
Mel Gibson, renowned both in front of and behind the camera for hits like “Braveheart” (which earned him five Oscars), “The Passion of the Christ,” and “Apocalypto,” still carries a tarnished reputation due to controversies. One of the most notable incidents occurred in 2006 when he was arrested for drunken driving and made anti-Semitic remarks, for which he later issued a public apology.
Despite this troubled past, Andrew Garfield emphasizes the progress the director has made.
“He has done a magnificent job on himself. And thank God, because he is an incredible director, and I think he deserves to make movies. He deserves to tell stories because he has a huge and compassionate heart.”
A Director of Deep Emotion and Humanity
Reflecting on the atmosphere during the filming of “Hacksaw Ridge,” which tells the true story of a conscientious objector during World War II, Garfield recalled Gibson’s authenticity as a director.
“He’s the kind of director who could step away from his monitors with tears in his eyes. He knew when it was right, and he knew when it wasn’t. And I really trusted him. He’s a visceral storyteller, it’s as if he couldn’t help but feel everything. He has a lot of empathy.”
The Return of a Passionate Filmmaker
Nearly a decade after their collaboration, Mel Gibson is once again stepping behind the camera to direct the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,” titled “The Resurrection of the Christ,” a film that will be released in two parts, both scheduled for 2027. The first part will be released in theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while the second will debut nearly six weeks later, on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. This highly anticipated project could mark a new phase in the career of a man some believe is experiencing an artistic—and personal—redemption.
“Hacksaw Ridge” is available on Prime Video. To watch “The Passion of the Christ,” whose trailer is available below, head to UniversCiné or VOD.
