Dubbed “The Grand Finale,” the third and final “Downton Abbey” film is set to premiere in theaters on September 10. A new trailer released today prepares us to say our farewells.
The end is nearly upon us. Since its inception in 2010 in the UK, “Downton Abbey” has delighted viewers worldwide across six seasons before making the leap to the big screen. The first film was intended as a standalone finale to the Crawley family saga, but its success spurred not just a second but now a third film.
This upcoming movie is confirmed to be the last, as indicated by its title, “The Grand Finale.” The first trailer teases it as a memorable “place we will always remember” and a “family we will never forget,” suggesting that everything until now has led to this final farewell. The closing scene of what looks more like a teaser than a full trailer hints at the Crawleys possibly leaving their long-time home along with their servants, wrapping up a narrative that began in 1912 just after the Titanic disaster and will conclude in 1930, on the cusp of a new decade and societal shifts in England, a period explored through the franchise created by Julian Fellowes.

While the late Maggie Smith will not feature in the film, the rest of the cast is expected to return for this grand finale, from Hugh Bonneville to Michelle Dockery, along with Jim Carter, Elisabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Brendan Coyle, and Joanne Froggatt. They are joined by Paul Giamatti and Dominic West, who returns after being introduced in the previous installment.
September 10 marks the turning of a significant page in pop culture with this third “Downton Abbey” film, which is poised to be even more successful than its predecessors and remind us of its captivating charm, while initially seeming destined just for British audiences.
