Nick Frost, set to play Rubeus Hagrid in the new “Harry Potter” series adaptation, has vowed not to mimic the portrayal by his predecessor in the previous eight films.
Taking on the role of Hagrid in the upcoming Harry Potter adaptation is a task Nick Frost approaches with a deep sense of duty. Known for his role in “Shaun of the Dead,” the actor understands the special place Hagrid holds in the hearts of fans, and he is prepared to work hard to meet their expectations.

Nick Frost steps into the shoes of the beloved Robbie Coltrane, whose portrayal remains revered as true to J.K. Rowling’s novels to this day. However, Frost is aware that to win over fans, mere imitation won’t suffice. The English actor promises a “different yet respectful” take on Hagrid, as he shared with Collider:
I am very aware of what has been done before me (…). I aim to bring something not just different since the original material must be respected, but I believe there’s room for adding subtle nuances. (…) I’ve always seen Hagrid as a lovable, lost, violent, funny, warm child. Having a whole season for each book will allow me to delve deeper into all these aspects.
The series’ production recently revealed the names of the three main actors for this new adaptation. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will appear as Ron Weasley. It was also announced that Professors Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall will be played by John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Janet McTeer, respectively.
Seven Seasons Planned
Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This half-giant has a special bond with Harry Potter, as it was he who placed Harry at the Dursley’s doorstep after the death of his parents. Throughout their schooling, he remains a faithful and loyal ally to the young wizard and his friends.
Filming for the first season of the series is expected to start soon, with an anticipated release at the end of 2026 or early 2027. Seven seasons are planned, each adapting one of the novels from the wizard apprentice saga. The original film adaptation resulted in eight movies (the seventh book – The Deathly Hallows – was split into two parts).
The Harry Potter series will be exclusively available on HBO Max.
