Yesterday saw the release of “I Who Loved You,” a film depicting the romantic entanglement between actress Simone Signoret and actor Yves Montand, the latter being the focus of our daily quiz which challenges you to identify eight of his movies.
While numerous biopics such as “Elvis,” “Bob Marley One Love,” and “Oppenheimer” have been released in recent years in the United States, France has also seen its share of films centered on various notable figures.
For instance, Tahar Rahim’s portrayal of Charles Aznavour in “Monsieur Aznavour,” or the biopic “Simone, The Journey of a Century” dedicated to former stateswoman Simone Veil, portrayed by actress Elsa Zylberstein, are notable examples.

This week not one, but two major figures of French cinema have their stories adapted into the feature film “I Who Loved You,” specifically the celebrity couple Yves Montand and Simone Signoret whose stormy love affair has been brought to the big screen by Diane Kurys, starring Roschdy Zem and Marina Foïs in the lead roles.
Are you familiar with the filmography of this actor who was a major part of French cinema in the 70s and 80s? Before you dive in, here are some behind-the-scenes secrets about “I Who Loved You,” which hit theaters yesterday.
DID YOU KNOW?
A Dynamic Duo
It was Marina Foïs who suggested to Diane Kurys to meet Roschdy Zem for the role of Yves Montand. The two actors, close friends in real life, had already co-starred three times before, in “Le Raid” (2001), “Happy Few” (2010), and “Bodybuilder” (2014).
Emotional Reunion
Diane Kurys reunited part of the team from her very first film, “Diabolo Menthe,” including director of photography Philippe Rousselot.
The Music of a Lifetime
Diane Kurys chose Philippe Sarde to compose the original soundtrack for “I Who Loved You.” This choice was symbolic as Sarde composed music for all the films referenced by the director in her movie, including “La Vie devant soi.” The theme from “Les Choses de la Vie,” which concludes the movie, was re-recorded with the Orchestra of Paris.
“I Who Loved You” is currently showing in theaters.
