Is there a new “La Casa de Papel” on the horizon for Netflix? That’s what the early glimpses of Álex Pina’s new series suggest, as he continues his partnership with the platform following “Sky Rojo,” “La Casa de Papel,” and its spin-off “Berlin.”

Together with Esther Martínez Lobato, the showrunner doubles down on the successful formula of Spanish-language series on Netflix, a category that has seen a growing number of original creations over the years.

First Look at the New Crazy Series from the Creator of “La Casa de Papel”

Netflix has released a teaser for “El refugio atómico” (which could translate to “The Nuclear Shelter” or “The Atomic Refuge”), conceived by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the minds behind his three biggest hits.

Scheduled for 2024, this new series depicts the complex survival of a group of multimillionaires sequestered in a luxury bunker named Kimera Underground Park, as the brink of World War III looms.

From this bunker, they will watch the world they knew collapse on screens in a bewildering spectacle. While the outside world becomes increasingly terrifying, they will enjoy their private town complete with a basketball court, restaurant, Zen garden, cocktail bar, therapist’s couch, gym, and spa.

This is what their legendary status of privilege is reduced to: learning to live in a luxury den, in an underground world filled with enigmas where the long-standing debts of two families, scarred by past wounds, are finally settled.

Produced by Vancouver Media and set for exclusive release on Netflix, “El refugio atómico” is an eight-episode series, each lasting an hour, written by Álex Pina, Esther Martínez Lobato, David Barrocal, David Oliva, Lorena G. Maldonado, and Humberto Ortega.

The first teaser evokes the thrilling and fast-paced vibe of “La Casa de Papel” with a new set of vibrant characters. This new claustrophobic thriller promises numerous thrilling twists and could very well be another hit for Álex Pina on Netflix. Will it reach the heights of “La Casa de Papel”?

When Does the New Series from the Creator of “La Casa de Papel” Release?

The bunker’s inhabitants will be portrayed by Miren Ibarguren (“Phenomena,” “Everybody Lies”), Joaquín Furriel (“The Tree of Blood,” “Intuition”), Natalia Verbeke (“The Women on the 6th Floor,” “Everybody Lies”), Carlos Santos (“There’s Something Wrong with the Children,” “The Man with a Thousand Faces”) and Montse Guallar (“If I Hadn’t Met You,” “The Body”).

Fresh Spanish cinema talents will also join the cast, including Pau Simon, Alicia Falcó, Agustina Bisio, and Álex Villazón. The episodes of “El refugio atómico” will be directed by genre experts such as Jesús Colmenar (“La Casa de Papel,” “Sky Rojo”), David Barrocal (“Sky Rojo,” “Berlin”), and José Manuel Cravioto (“Journey to the Center of the Earth,” “El Chapo”).

You won’t have to wait long to dive into this promising new Spanish series, poised to follow in the footsteps of “La Casa de Papel,” as “El refugio atómico” will be available starting September 19th on Netflix.
