Reese Witherspoon shares why David Fincher didn’t cast her in the blockbuster “Gone Girl” and praises Rosamund Pike’s devilish performance. Here are her thoughts.
Reese Witherspoon opened up about her experience with the 2014 thriller “Gone Girl,” which was in development with her set to play the lead role of Amy Elliott Dunne, as agreed upon by author Gillian Flynn. Witherspoon was leading the project through her production company, now known as Hello Sunshine. However, when director David Fincher came on board, he chose not to cast her.
“David called me in – and it’s not his fault – but he said, ‘You are absolutely wrong for this role, and I’m not picking you,’” Witherspoon recounted on an episode of the “Las Culturistas” podcast aired last September (via Variety). “I had numerous discussions with the screenwriter Gillian Flynn, and she kept saying, ‘No, I really want you to do it.’… But [Fincher] replied, ‘You’re mistaken.’“
The challenging role eventually went to Rosamund Pike, who starred alongside Ben Affleck in this dark romantic comedy. The thriller marked a turning point in Pike’s career, landing her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. The film was also a major commercial success, grossing $369 million worldwide, making it the biggest hit of David Fincher’s career.
A Significant Self-Reflection
“It was primarily a lesson for my ego,” Witherspoon reflected on her conversation with Fincher. “It was as if he was telling me, ‘No, you’re not right for everything.’ And he was absolutely right… Fincher was phenomenal. Rosamund Pike is devilish, and Ben Affleck is somewhat the fool on the other side.“
Reese Witherspoon still earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress that same year for her leading role in the biopic “Wild,” directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who would soon reunite with her on the acclaimed series “Big Little Lies.” Witherspoon produced both Wild and Gone Girl. She currently co-stars in the series “The Morning Show” alongside Jennifer Aniston, which concluded its fourth season in November last year on Apple TV+. A fifth season is scheduled for 2026.
In the meantime, earlier seasons of The Morning Show are available exclusively on Apple TV+. As for Gone Girl, the film can be found on Disney+.
