The imperative defeat of former President Donald Trump in the forthcoming November election is a concern pressing on the hearts of many. His tenure marked a period of intense climate change denial, unchecked authoritarian tendencies, and significant environmental degradation. As the head of the national environmental group Friends of the Earth Action, I am convinced that the only candidate capable of overcoming Trump’s challenge is the Democratic contender, Vice President Kamala Harris.
Although I have found myself at odds with several aspects of the Biden-Harris administration’s policies, it is clear that no other candidates match their level of experience or have equally compelling platforms. Jill Stein and the Green Party might appear as the natural selection for those of us dedicated to environmental causes; however, they have yet to prove themselves as a viable national party capable of significant political influence.
This election is a critical decision between a disastrous dictatorship and a sustainable future for our planet.
Among over 519,000 elected positions in the United States, the Green Party only occupies 142, with none at the statewide or federal level. Even in states like California and New York, which use rank-choice voting and fusion voting systems, the Green Party has struggled to secure significant electoral wins. Their most notable achievement remains the election of the mayor of Oakland, California – far from establishing them as a formidable force on the national political stage.
In stark contrast stands Vice President Kamala Harris, who boasts a robust environmental track record. During her tenure as California’s attorney general, Harris was a staunch opponent of corporate polluters and a fervent advocate for environmental justice. She robustly defended numerous state laws related to consumer protection, public health, and animal rights. Furthermore, as vice president, Harris played a pivotal role by casting the decisive vote in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act, marking a significant achievement in federal climate legislation.
The choice this election cycle is between a destructive tyrant and a viable future for our planet. Trump’s previous administration inflicted lasting damage, consistently favoring the interests of oil magnates and dismantling over 100 environmental regulations and safeguards. His presidential campaign has repeatedly shown that it is driven by self-interest, prioritizing personal and financial gains over the welfare of the American populace.
If you are genuinely committed to advocating for a healthier, more equitable planet, and to the essential task of building political power, then, despite any policy disagreements with Vice President Harris, supporting her in this election is crucial. Third-party candidates, while presenting themselves as alternatives to the Democrats, risk merely diverting crucial votes that could otherwise help defeat Trump. I call on everyone who values climate action, democratic integrity, and social justice to look beyond the misleading promises of Jill Stein and instead cast their vote for Vice President Harris. Vote as if the survival of our planet is at stake—because indeed, it is.
