On Friday, students from the Sunrise Movement, a youth-driven environmental organization, exited classrooms in over 30 high schools and universities across the United States. Their demonstration aimed to confront President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial policies and advocate for climate justice, labor rights, and democratic values.
During the protests, participants displayed placards and banners with phrases such as “This Is a Climate Emergency,” “Protect Our Futures,” “People Not Profit,” “Fuck Trump,” “Together We Rise,” and “The Dems Failed, The People Won’t.”
“Students from diverse regions of the nation united to deliver a strong message of unity. We refuse to sit idly by as Donald Trump’s perilous policies endanger our core values,” remarked Aster Chau, a 16-year-old participant from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “Our movement is driven by hopeāthe hope that collective action will compel our leaders to enact decisive measures. We are determined and unyielding. This is our future, and we are reclaiming it.”

During his initial term as president, Trump launched numerous assaults on environmental protections. This election cycle, he has committed to aggressive drilling policies and promised to dismantle the climate initiatives of the Biden-Harris administration if the oil industry supports his campaign with $1 billion.
Following Trump’s electoral victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, the Sunrise Movement and other critics have expressed disappointment in the Democratic Party leadership for not sufficiently addressing the concerns of the working class.
“After decades enduring an unjust economy and a corrupt political system, millions are desperately seeking accountability,” the group stated on social media. “It’s crucial for the Democratic Party to take this dissatisfaction seriously.”

In a statement released on Friday, Sunrise emphasized that the walkouts should serve as a wake-up call to both political parties: “If Democrats wish to succeed, they must cease catering to major donors and corporations and focus on progressive policies that promise a sustainable future for everyone.”
Manuel Ivan Guerrero, a student from the University of Central Florida, highlighted the urgency of their actions, “Today marks just the beginning. We are angry and fearful, yet resolute in our readiness to combat these challenges.”
“We possess the capability to overthrow Donald Trump, but it requires our leaders to be courageous and proactive,” the 18-year-old continued. “The era of hollow promises has ended. We are prepared to do all it takes to secure a better world.”
