Featured in Netflix’s “Tu me manques,” this 53-year-old British actor has shifted from Hollywood blockbusters to smaller projects, achieving remarkable success. Clearly, his gamble has paid off.
It’s almost a running joke. Every time Netflix announces a new series based on a Harlan Coben novel, the question arises: will Richard Armitage be in it?
For those not familiar with the detailed career of this British actor, here are some noteworthy stats. Richard Armitage boasts a 26-year career, with credits in 27 movies, 17 TV series, and a solo cinema ticket sales tally of 15.4 million. Born in Huncote, a quaint village in the Blaby district near Leicester, England, Armitage made his acting debut in 1999 with “Star Wars – Episode 1.” He later captivated audiences in the series “North and South.”
However, he is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf king in “The Hobbit” series. In the saga, this king leads a quest to reclaim a lost treasure, relying on Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to assist in this endeavor. In Hollywood, his path seemed set. By 2013, he was even shortlisted to play the next Batman, a role that ultimately went to Ben Affleck.
A Surprising Turn
In recent years, Armitage has focused his efforts on television, especially on Netflix. He has crafted his own “Armitage Television Universe” by starring in no fewer than five Harlan Coben adaptations (Obsession, Stay Close, The Stranger, The Five, and Tu me manques). His roles vary—from a family man to a detective—but his characters always harbor a deep secret.
In an interview, the American author explained that it’s a fun “challenge” to include him in each of his series. Netflix was more than willing to agree. Regardless, the writers have continuously provided him with complex characters that allow him to thrive on the small screen. Seeing the success of Harlan Coben’s works on the platform, it’s clear that this was a very successful bet.
