The upcoming film “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to begin production this summer, and two rising stars have been cast as the lead characters in this eagerly awaited prequel.
The new Hunger Games movie has officially found its protagonists! Based on the latest book in the series by Suzanne Collins, the storyline takes place 40 years after the events of the last installment, which was released in 2023, and 24 years before the original story featuring Jennifer Lawrence.
In two videos released on social media, the names of the two main young actors were unveiled. Joseph Zada will portray a younger version of Haymitch, the character originally played by Woody Harrelson. This marks Zada’s debut in a film role.
Whitney Peak has been selected to play Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Peak previously held a major role in the “Gossip Girl” reboot and appeared in the sequel to “Hocus Pocus.”
Both actors are succeeding Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth, who were the leads in the previous film, “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
Casting Rumors Abound
While there has been no official confirmation, rumors suggest several notable actors may join the rest of the cast. Ralph Fiennes, known for his role as the antagonist in the Harry Potter series, might portray a young President Coriolanus Snow.
Recently Oscar-winning Kieran Culkin could take on the role of Caesar Flickerman, previously played by Stanley Tucci. Elle Fanning is rumored to portray a young and eccentric Effie Trinket, a character brought to life by Elizabeth Banks in the first four films. Jesse Plemons is expected to play Plutarch Heavensbee, a role originally held by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The movie “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed the last four films of the franchise. Filming is scheduled to start in July in Germany. The book, released on March 18, 2025, sold 1.2 million copies in its first week in the United States.
“Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” hitting theaters November 18, 2026.
