Netflix has obtained the rights to the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Sifu. As a reminder, Sifu is a kung-fu action-adventure video game developed and published by the French studio Sloclap.

In December 2022, it was announced that a film adaptation of the video game was in the works. Originally, Derek Kolstad (known for John Wick) was set to write the screenplay. Although there has been little news about the project since then, Deadline now reports that Netflix has acquired the film rights and has brought in T.S. Nowlin to pen the screenplay. It is unclear if Kolstad is still involved in the project.

Chad Stahelski, the former stunt double for Keanu Reeves who turned director and is best known for creating the John Wick series, will produce the film with his company 87Eleven Entertainment. No director has yet been attached to the project.

“The video game developed and published by Sloclap tells a story of vengeance set in contemporary China,” the Deadline article describes the plot. “It follows a martial arts school student (Sifu) who seeks to avenge the murder of his mentor. The twist is that thanks to a magical talisman, every time our hero dies, he resurrects, but at a cost: he ages with each use. If he ages too quickly, his death will become permanent and his quest unfinished.”

T.S. Nowlin is known for his work on the screenplays for films such as The Maze Runner (2014), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), Phoenix Forgotten (2017), Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), Pacific Rim Uprising (2018), and The Adam Project (2022). In addition to writing, he also served as an executive producer on the Maze Runner trilogy.
