Following “Civil War,” explore Alex Garland’s (“Ex Machina”, “28 Days Later”) latest war film now available on Prime Video. Here’s everything you need to know about “Warfare”.
Described by American critics as “one of the most intense war films I’ve ever seen,” “a film that offers a harrowing, relentless, and utterly devastating look at modern warfare,” and “a film that grips you… and doesn’t let go until the final credits,” this intense war movie has made its mark.
Released in theaters in the United States by distributor A24, this powerful and gripping feature did not receive the same treatment in France, where it has just premiered directly on Prime Video, joining other critically acclaimed films like the Oscar-nominated American Fiction and Nickel Boys.
The film comes from Alex Garland, whose next installment in the zombie trilogy “28 Days Later,” which he oversees with Danny Boyle, is soon hitting theaters. Garland teamed up with Ray Mendoza, who he previously collaborated with on his earlier war film “Civil War.”
A Stunning Real-Time War Film
Garland and Mendoza co-wrote and co-directed this new war film, inspired by the life of Ray Mendoza, a former U.S. Navy SEAL during the Iraq War. “Warfare” chronicles the fierce encounter his platoon faced on November 19, 2006, the day after the Battle of Ramadi.
Rooted in true events, “Warfare” not only recounts a terrifying war story, it immerses you in the horrors experienced by both soldiers and civilians who were held hostage and besieged in their homes.
The film focuses on two sections of Navy SEALs, trapped and critically injured by enemy attacks, as they desperately try to escape from a building that could become their grave at any moment.
The movie follows this escape attempt in real time, providing a suffocating, breathless, and traumatic cinematic experience. With immersive direction, meticulous sound design, and a committed and accurate cast, “Warfare” is bound to leave a lasting impression.
Featuring a Cast of Rising Stars
“Warfare” boasts an excellent cast of emerging talents. Among the leading actors are Will Poulter, known for his roles in “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” “Midsommar,” and “The Maze Runner;” Kit Connor, who gained recognition from the series “Heartstopper;” and Joseph Quinn, known from “Stranger Things,” soon to be seen in “Gladiator II” and the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot.
The rest of the cast includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from “Reservation Dogs,” Cosmo Jarvis from the series “Shogun” and “Peaky Blinders,” Michael Gandolfini, son of James Gandolfini, known from “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Daredevil,” Charles Melton from “Riverdale” and seen in “May December,” and Noah Centineo, known from the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” trilogy.
This film shoot allowed its actors, who are becoming increasingly visible on screen, to forge deep friendships. Their brotherhood shines through in “Warfare,” adding authenticity to their characters and relationships, surpassing the boundaries of fiction.
The actors even got matching tattoos, “Call on Me,” referencing the song by Eric Prydz, which is heard at the beginning of the film in the first scene where the SEAL team members gather around a television to watch the famous aerobics class music video.
“Warfare” is now available on Prime Video.
